Dear Person Seeking a Job: Why I Can't Hire You

Potential employers have to respond to the incentives and disincentives that exist in today's world, and those do not favor conventional permanent employees.

I know you're hard-working, motivated, tech-savvy and willing to learn. The reason I can't hire you has nothing to do with your work ethic or skills; it's the high-cost Status Quo, and the many perverse consequences of maintaining a failing Status Quo.

The sad truth is that it's costly and risky to hire anyone to do anything, and "bankable projects" that might generate profit/require more labor are few and far between. The overhead costs for employees have skyrocketed. So even though the wages employees see on their paychecks have stagnated, the total compensation costs the employer pays have risen substantially.

Thirty years ago the overhead costs were considerably less, adjusted for inflation, and there weren't billboards advertising a free trip to Cabo if you sued your employer. (I just saw an advert placed by a legal firm while riding a BART train that solicited employees to sue their employers, with the incentive being "free money" for a vacation to Cabo.)

Just an example of our litigious society. I wonder how these things would have worked out 75 years ago. We have become a nation of whiners and benefit addicts. My Grandfather for instance had a construction company and even during the depression, kept his employees on the payroll even though there was little work and some of that work did not pay as they went bankrupt. He did this up to the point of losing his last asset, his house, when he closed the doors. However, while he was a utopian employer, he would have burried a pick in the head of anyone who sued him over some alleged workplace issue.

Exactly. This is not the same country it was just 4 years ago. The rate at which the CHANGE has been implemented is shocking.

4 years ago no one was afraid of being retaliated against or SWAT'd for their speech or blog comments. 4 years ago no one thought our President might declare martial law and cancel the presidential election so he could stay in office. 4 years ago no one thought we'd withdraw from Iraq COMPLETELY. 4 years ago no one thought NASA would be all but eliminated. 4 years ago no one thought we'd have SELF PROCLAIMED Marxists in our White House. 4 years ago we'd never thought that leaks of highly classified information would become a common occurrence from the White House. 4 years ago we'd never thought that a president would flood Mexico with UNTRACED guns as a plan to undermine our 2nd Amendment rights. 4 years ago we never thought our president would attempt to ban domestic oil drilling in the United States. 4 years ago we never thought that not buying health insurance would be a CRIME, punishable with a fine. 4 years ago we never thought we'd have a president whose religion is unclear. 4 years ago we never thought we would have a president that would say "57 States". 4 years ago we never thought we'd have a president whose nanny was a transvestite. 4 years ago we never thought our president would overturn Federal Law without consent from Congress. 4 years ago we never thought we'd have a president who has illegal alien relatives living in the United States. 4 years ago we never thought our president would SUE our States. 4 years ago we never thought our president would disallow associating Islam with terrorism. 4 years ago we never thought our president would be ineligible to hold office and be allowed to stay in office. 4 years ago we never thought we'd have a president who is actively working to destroy the private sector while funneling billions of dollars to public and government sector union enterprises. 4 years ago we never would have seen naked photos of our president's mother on the Internet. 4 years ago we never thought we'd have an openly gay-friendly president who throws gay military parades. 4 years ago we never thought we'd have a president who forces a university to remove a Christian cross prior to his speech. 4 years ago we never thought our president would force religious institutions to administer contraceptives and subsidize abortions. 4 years ago we never thought our president would wage war on Bibles in our military. 4 years ago we never thought our president would require a teleprompter while speaking to 6th graders at an elementary school. 4 years ago we never thought our president had once eaten dog. 4 years ago we never thought our president had once used an alias. 4 years ago we never thought our president's parents would both be communist activists. 4 years ago we never thought our president and his regime would have complete control of our news media and its message. 4 years ago we never thought our president would wage war on our free-market, capitalist Republic and our Constitution and succeed at doing so, unchallenged and with impunity. 4 years ago we never thought a president would actively work to 'CHANGE' or 'TRANSFORM' America into another form of government. 4 years ago we failed to realize that a race card can allow one powerful person to destroy all that our Forefathers fought and died for.

The comment section at the end of the article is quite interesting. One guy was ripping conservatives for saying France is a mess and will collapse but they are still "going strong" since the conservatives have been saying this.

Then..... you got this bozo and his comment (** is my editing from the "full version"...lol): Highly recommend self-employment as a consultant, which I did as a bridge until my partners and I started a clinic.

Which brings up another point: it's MUCH easier to go it alone, or start your own business, when a system like the ACA is available. Today, the right is chanting "Obamacare hurts small businesses". Bullsh**. One of the most daunting aspects of ditching your corporate job, and heading off on your own, is that you're jeopardizing your family's healthcare. What if one of your kids gets a serious illness, God forbid?

The advantage I had was that my clinic is in Mass, so I didn't have that worry. In Mass, insurers can't consider a pre-existing condition (they can only know age and town of residence, in pricing your policy). And even if my business utterly failed and I got disabled for some reason, we'd have the universal Mass plan (MassHealth) to fall back on. This is the same advantage entrepreneurs in all of America's G20 competitors enjoy.

So, next time some right-winger starts claiming ACA "hurts small businesses and startups", hope you consider this other viewpoint - the one that 99% of the developed world has.
