"Not fit to be used to clean up after your dog" - or something like that. That's my opinion of Rolling Stone magazine.
However, the picture of Jimi Hendrix on the cover (not the best picture, either) did get my attention at the checkout stand last night. And lo, the cover was peppered with tantalizing bits of guitar talk. But what got me to actually pick it up and thumb through it was this: "Pete Townsend on Jimi Hendrix....Eddie Van Halen on Eric Clapton..."
Well, once it was in my hand the deed was as good as done. All those pictures!
Do I care who some nihilistic twenty-something at Rolling Stone thinks are the greatest guitar players of all time? Fuhgeddaboudit. Do I care what Pete Townnsend has to say about Jimi Hendrix? [edited] (I thought I cared what EVH thinks about EC until I read it...)
Anyway, I shelled out 12 bucks and bought it, so there.

When Gilmour didn’t make the top 75 on their 100 all time best list, I refused to acknowledge the existence of that rag. 12 bucks?
They’re clueless. But they do have Derek Trucks in there, and thats a plus.
Kind of funny that a publication undoubtedly run by those who think Obama’s ‘socialism’ message is great are price gouging like this.
Anyway, I agree that these kinds of lists of the ‘greatest guitarists’ etc. are generally a joke. ‘Great’ depends on what parameters you're talking about, and what your personal tastes are. Technically excellent and incredibly versatile - Steve Howe comes to mind. Great overall musician, songwriter, and capable of making the guitar emotional - Clapton comes to mind. There are a ton of people out there who have made a mark and moved the instrument forward. These lists are there to lure people to spend $12. Having said that, I'm curious what the article said..

Guess I haven’t been buying many magazines since the Internet.
I glanced at that issue, and my impression was that they were lumping all guitarists together, whether they are great soloists like Hendrix, or riff players like Keith Richards and players like The Edge who do their best work in more of a supporting role. That being said, I would still take someone like David Gilmour who can convey the emotion of the song through a variety of techniques over some of those hotshot blazing fingers types more interested in playing lots of notes.
A while back someone having a RS subscription moved out of my neighborhood and did not leave a forwarding address at the PO. Knowing I love music, the postmistress asked if she should just give me his RS magazines. I said sure. After a couple of issues I realized I felt like I needed to take a shower every time I opened one. I told her just to throw them away after that. An absolute rag.
agreed. It is disgusting. The last time I posted here about RS, it was about an interview w/David Gilmour. I detest the magazine so much I went to the library to read it, rather than buy it.
But this one I had have, if nothing else, so that can read the guitarist comments (and look at the pictures) on my own time. I love the guitar and it's players more than I hate rolling stone.
That's why this is a guitar caucus. Only a guitar player would understand.
I’m a player also, though I focus on acoustic. If you have a caucus ping list I’d be much obliged if you added me to it.
I'm thinking about looking around for an accoustic, which I haven't owned for - well, a long time. What do you like? I played a Taylor once that was awesome, but they're pricey and they have so many varieties now I wouldn't know where to begin.
I’ve played everything, including high-end Taylors and Martins. For my money, Larrivee is the best. They sound as good as or better than the high-end stuff for a fraction of the cost and the construction is impeccable. Check out the reviews - you won’t find any bad ones. My main guitar is a Larrivee D-03R, a dread with rosewood back and sides and a spruce top. I love it. Cost new was $800 with a hard shell case from an online dealer. I also have a Larrivee mahogany 12-string, which I love. I gig with both through a Fishman acoustic amp and have gotten a lot of compliments on the sound.
I had a good Martin for years, and other than that played low end acoustics (I’m poor). I loved the Martin but finally it got a hole in it but amazingly it didn’t affect the sound at all, had it patched.
Then about 11 years ago got a Larrivee, don’t have it handy to tell you the numbers, a dread nought. I like it better than the Martin (which I gave away), feels as though it plays itself. I got mine from a friend who was a dealer, for 600. If you want the distinguishing number I’ll find it.
I also bought from someone on FR a few years ago a hard top Ibanez 12 string, always wanted one but couldn’t afford a Martin or Taylor, although I’d go to guitar stores and play them, couldnt’ afford them. The Ibanez is pretty nice for a much cheaper 12 string. Wish I could afford a top grade one but such is life.
Brain dysfunction - meant a solid top Ibanez, not that it matters...
Never heard of Larrivee. thx for the info — will check it out.
I’m not a professional musician or anything; used to play a lot with friends who were better than me and picked up a lot of stuff just by watching and listening. I pretty much play every day.
