Statements of Facts May Not Yield Truths
08-16-12 | Self

When we were kids, we saw the damage a twisted truth or unfounded rumor can do to another person. As adults, we have a duty to uncover the truth through contemplation and evaluation. When we fail to examine “facts” as they are presented, we become the audience in a farce is played-out before our eyes. An example of facts-as-farce is happening now. Harry Reid accuses Romney of going ten years without paying taxes. This fact is actually true because during the first ten years of Romney's life he did not pay taxes and lived with his parents. But Reid's statement is not meant to be true, it is meant to provoke. It creates an illusion of fact that is neither all-together true nor false. He statement/strategy is being used to support an agenda that may cripple our nation.

Since we are the adults who contemplate and evaluate what we hear, let's look at another example of a fact that does not yield a truth. “James Madison's wife stayed in the White House longer then President Madison during the sacking of Washington D.C.” This statement insinuates that James Madison is cowardly. Upon a closer look, we learn that Madison left the White House to lead an artillery brigade, saving many American lives in the War of 1812. Furthermore, Madison was the last president to lead troops into battle as Commander-and-Chief. Critics and pundits who fail to tell the whole story distort meaning and cheat the listener of the truth and sometimes a lesson.

Perhaps the most concerning statement of fact that does not yield the truth is in Obama's statement that “you didn't get there on your own.” It is true that if someone owns their own business, they did not build the roads or the building they needed to conduct business. But the level of creativity, dedication, and grit it takes to build something where there once was nothing is part of the exceptionalism. Liberals seem to resent that these days. Perhaps we should thank the government of London for the success of our American the Olympians. After all, the Brits built the venue. Or do our Olympians deserve the accolades for their talent, perseverance and commitment? Of course they do. It is our responsibility to weigh what we hear against what we know to be true. The Founders' created a reason for us to be diligent in our quest for liberty and prosperity when they wrote the Constitution. Our job is to seek the truth knowing that human nature is imperfect and sometimes implausible. Let us not fail by allowing people to sell us a half-truth as sell us out of our constitutional rights as Americans.

P.S. Mr. President, since we can't do great things on our own, I want my piece of our Nobel Peace Prize by November.

Selective “statements of fact” are the stuff of half-truths, the favored tool of a practiced liar.

You printed your entire opinion on this page. But at the same time you are using the forum to invite people to your blog.

I'm not very good at this.

Is this blog pimping or not?

On the one hand, you didn't try to trick anyone into clicking a link and you were polite about it.

On the other hand, you probably won't respond to any of the posts yet you put it in bloggers and personal.

I'm so confused. I really need a ruling here.

Na, it’s not pimping because I don’t have any adds to sell. I’m just expressing my ideas and really hoping others will enjoy the article.

You can’t be the one to make the call of blog pimping on your own blog pimp. ;-)

Also, don’t pay any attention to me. I’m just wasting a little time until I have to go make dinner.

You printed your entire opinion on this page.

Also, many of his posts are genuine responses.

Not pimping, say I.

It’s fine. Take another look for proof reading, though.

In Theory, Theory and Practice are the same.

In Practice, they’re not.

He’s looking for blog hits, and should be popped in the chops for it.

Personally I think he’s trying to fund his gay lifestyle via his blog ads.

So if you have a problem with me then why do you come back? I am just posting and hoping to get some ideas out. Whats wrong with trying to get some of my other ideas out in the process?

And more importantly, what about the issues?
