Exactly. I agree, and most Americans agree.

It does the GOP no good to say that they want an Amendment (that has no chance of being ratified anyway) which would forbid a woman ending such a pregnancy.

And the pure pro-lifers need to realize that their cause is undermined by demanding fealty to a pledge to implement abortion policy that most Americans oppose.

He shouldn’t back down until they get his last name right!

I find it's usually his supporters who botch it. I find this very telling.

Yes.

According to Gallup they oppose it by a four to one margin, 80% to 20%. FWIW I am pro-life, but part of the 80%.

Politics is the art of the possible. Politicians who try to do the impossible lose elections.

I disagree with your scenarios, but you know what I respect that you put forth a cogent and reasoned argument for your point of view.
Thanks.

To: SE Mom; All

Well stated post SE!

Folks, we all have to stand back a minute. There are good points being made on all sides in our own lose knit federation of conservatives, independents, libertarians and GOPe, as we call them now.

I will admit to jumping on the panic wagon with the Akin faux pas, but it certainly was not because I am not a good enough conservative for cryin out loud! I watched and did research on the whole Foley meltdown set up and fiasco. Many of us watched and documented the whole train wreck from inside out. The dirty behind the scenes set ups and dirty tricks.

Who wouldn’t panic a bit after that disaster?? You so called ‘purists’ need to give us a friggin break. Our entire country is at stake if Obama and the democrats win. This time it is no joke or made up manipulation from our GOPe overlords. It is the real deal. Obama will destroy this Republic if he is re elected.

But at this point, these endless Akin is a saint and anybody that doesn’t support him is a Rino traitor posts are getting on my last nerve. I actually feel like I am being shaken down much like Jesse Jackson does to anyone that doesn’t give him everything he wants ! I am getting emails, tweets, and endless shakedowns and admonitions from Huckleberry’s troops.

Enough already.

So you feel wronged. We’re sorry. But political reality is sitting here in all of it’s pitiful and gory glory. Stop playing against those closest to your viewpoints and go after the real enemy here...Marxist progressives!! If you folks in Mo. want Akin...then drag him across the finish line. Stop with the populist smear campaign against your own side of the aisle.

Start smearing your real enemies.....Obama and the godless democrats.

End of rant.

FRegards.

Does Akin really want to go down in history as the guy who argued the case for "legitimate" rape of women

Where, when, and how did Akin do that?

So let's say he steps down, Sarah Steelman (endorsed by pro-life women's groups and Sara Palin) becomes the candidate. The money floods back in to the race and in at least this one case, Palin and the GOPe are in agreement. Win Win.

He's not going to step down. That's not on the menu. If we are going to go that route, than certainly Romney should step down as he high high unfavorables WITHOUT gaffes, and there are better candidates. No one particularly expects Romney to step down.

GIVEN that he is not going to step down, we have to make the best of it.

Please don't be coy. In the infamous interview. Do I think he used the wrong word? Yes. But that is not the point. He will still go down in the minds of many as the guy who argued the case for legitimate rape.

Long after he loses this election and people forget his name, he will still be known as the “legitimate rape guy”.
And if Claire McCaskill is the deciding vote on Obamacare’s repeal he will ultimately be the “legitimate rape guy” who helped insure that more abortions are performed on the taxpayers dime.

I was referring to Romney.

I am completely aware of that. However, my argument has been for some time that the bottom line in this election is to make sure that conservatives win back the Senate and strengthen their hold on the House. Otherwise you have nothing to check Obama if he wins, and frankly nothing to force Romney to show some backbone if he wins.

So supporting Akin in this, in my opinion, is pretty much just like casting a vote for the flaming liberal with a "D" by his name.

The moron socons need to leave the party.

Obviously someone has hurt you very much. Your bitterness is bleeding through the screen.

Social conservatives are not morons. They are simply fed up that every other voice has a place in the public square but theirs, so they are not going to be silenced.

None of that changes my opinion that Akin should step down. He is only damaging his own legacy at this point.

Agreed. This is the part that some just don’t get. If we don’t stop Obama and Obamacare in November, any hope of social conservatives goes down the drain.

We’ll have Obamacare bankrupting us and authorizing all abortions including partial birth abortions, on demand with taxpayer dollars.

We’ll have a Supreme Court that will be upholding all sorts of limits on religious freedoms for Christians.

And we will have a wrecked economy, primed for a socialist system to step in and fill the void.

Todd Akin has to go.

Only among those 'tards with a willful English comprehension deficit.

While there is such a thing as legitimate homicide (the lawyers use "justifiable"), there is no such thing as legitimate rape (in the sense of justifiable). And there is no way you can make a case that Akin argued there is.

On the other hand, there are legitimate cases of rape and murder, in the sense that they really happened, which is the sense in which Akin used the word.

Oddly, you can make the case that OJ Simpson legitimately murdered Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, i.e, that the OJ case was a legitimate murder [case]. That is to say, he really did do the killings (jury notwithstanding), and he was not justified in so doing (no legitimate self defense argument could be raised).

It's sad that English is such a difficult language for the output of American schools.
