Reno Air Racing Prep - 2012
The Pylon Place ^ | September 3, 2012 | Marilyn Dash

Keeping up with the news surrounding the Reno Air Races this year has been exhausting. Racers and fans alike have so many questions, i.e., are we racing, what changes will we see, who will be there, who won’t, will the fans notice any changes? These are all good questions. I hope that I have, through this column, helped everyone understand what the process has been following the horrific event of September 16, 2011. I have tried to listen to the questions the fans have been asking and answer them here.

If you've attended the Reno Air Races, AKA National Championship Air Races, you know what it's like. If you haven't, you're in for a treat. :)

The writer herself is a regular annual competitor in the biplane class.

I used to work at a fixed base operation in Reno. During the air races it was great because you got to see so many vintage planes up close. I got to fuel up P-51’s, P-38’s, B-25, B-17’s. Very cool. Crowded, but cool.

Watching the WW2 planes take off was the greatest. I still say the P-51 is the most beautiful fighter plane ever built (from WW2 era, that is).

And no other engine sounds like it, neither.

Was that the plane that crashed into the crowd last year?

How in the world can this be put on after last year? I’m amazed. The lawsuits must have been ruinous, and there were people injured as well as killed.

A variant. P-51D to be exact.

The P-51D that crashed was heavily modified.

Nine people dead, 50 injured, and the show goes on? Are the owners shielded from liability some way?

Gee: I've been saying that about Formula 1, Sprint Cars, Indianapolis, NASCAR, Bussing kids to football games, fraternity hazing, other than well-done hamburgers, skate boards, and training for marathons for years but no one listened!

Thanks for speaking up for adrenalin control, it could be DC's next big program.

re: “And no other engine sounds like it, neither.”

Yes! Absolutely. The sound of that engine when it’s taking off is thrilling.

Gee, not to mention shuttle flights, swimming pools, doctor visits, trains, planes, buses, gun free zones.

...and we could go on forever.

From what I read and understand, the "heroic" Jimmy Leeward put many modifications on the plane, which went unreported to the race organizers and the plane also went *without inspection* by the race organizers...or inspected incompetently.

Leeward was a cheat, IMO, a dangerous hot-dogging cheat. Why no comment on this rotten, selfish old fart here, who ultimately killed so many people, and left others with life-changing injury?

This is ridiculous.

I suppose it's the old pilot culture, "my passion is flight and my noisy flying toys, and get out of my way, who cares who dies? My passion, my agenda... "

These hot-doggers are super-rich, and buy their toys with corporation LLCs to avoid lawsuits when they kill people on the ground.

They disgust me. Shame on them. I hope the lawyers find a way around the LLCs.
