Mother gets arrested and spends 18 hours in jail for letting her children play outside unsupervised
wordpress ^ | September 20, 2012 | Dan from Squirrel Hill

The neighbor who called the police said that the children were playing outside unsupervised, and the police officer arrested their mother for so-called “child endangerment.” It later turned out that the mother actually had been outside watching her children – and so the charges were dropped.

But even if the mother hadn’t been outside watching her children – even if she had been inside – it would still not have been a legitimate reason to have her arrested. I mean – to any rational person who values freedom – it would not have been a legitimate reason to have her arrested. Obviously, to the neighbor who called the police, as well as to the people who write and enforce the laws, it would have been a legitimate reason to have her arrested – and that’s a sad shame.

“My daughter had him [the police officer] around the leg saying, “Please, please don’t take my mom to jail. Please, she didn’t do anything wrong,’” Cooper told the station.

The police officer needs to be the one going to jail. Having a hard time believing this story could happen in Texas. I know it did but this is a travesty.

It’s a sad day when Americans think they can take parenting into their own hands. Disgusting. We need to get these child abusers OFF the streets and into the appropriate programs. Thank goodness for the brave officers who protect and serve. This is what you get when the very darkest notions of “individual rights” run roughshod over the People’s Will in accordance with our Leaders and their Officers and Representatives who keep ALL of us safe. God Bless America!

Around 25 years ago I was talking with a group of workers, all of whom grew up in the Tidewater, Virginia area except me.

It turns out that none of them were supervised by their parents when they were out doors playing. I remember a couple said there was a whistle from some business which sounded and they took that as a signal to go home and eat supper.

It was the same with me and my siblings in rural NW, Florida. Mother would lean out the door and yell that Dinner was ready or that Supper was ready and we would go inside and eat. BTW, my Mother was the best Mother one could imagine. It was just a different world.

One can no longer do that tho it may not have been as safe as we thought even back then. We really were a lot more independent and that is a good thing.

I’m glad to hear the charges have been dropped.

Another thread from a couple of days ago about the incident if anyone is interested in the comments thereon.

Nine and six year old kids. I don't know about 6, but by 9 I was going out for long bike rides (well, maybe five miles) completely unsupervised.

La Porte like many communities has too many public “servants” with nothing to do all day long but harrass the citizens. Cut the taxes and eliminate a whole bunch of government jobs and this kind of harrassment will end.

The kids were 6 and 9, and the mother gets arrested? I remember being 4 years old and being taken all over the place on Halloween by my older brother who was 7. They’d have to arrest every mother in those days, because there were a lot of unsupervised kids running around (1950s), ...many of them younger than the kids in the story.

Just an aside, my neighbor has been teaching her kids to play in the street. She’s there with them but they run down the road while she’s walking with a toddler. There is of course a blind turn. They are 2 to 4 years old. Sometimes mothers supervision isn’t all that great.

The State ALWAYS has the safety of minors at heart — NOT!!!

In 1978, my wife and I came to know a young woman named Patty. She was a devoutly religious young mother who’d become more devout when her husband and father of her two small sons aged 2 and 6 informed her that he was leaving. In dire economic straits, I offered to let her stay in our
former home in Chamblee — which was not rented at the time – rent-free until she got back on her feet. She had been clandestinely home schooling the 6 year old for about 2 years using very well done Christian course materials from
an organization in Texas, Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.). The lad had recently been tested and had placed at least a year ABOVE his chronological age. As required by the government school authorities at the time, she dutifully apprised the authorities of his scores.

For reasons which would become clear in a moment, Patty had been harassed by the DeKalb County school authorities for about 6 months and, by the time she moved into the Chamblee house, had been — unbeknownst to us — ORDERED to put the 6 year old into the nearest government elementary school or suffer the consequences. Because she wanted the boys to be educated Christians, there was no way she was going to do that and she told them so.

At approximately 2 am one morning, a loud knock on the door announced the arrival of the aforementioned “consequences.”

Dressed only in a nightgown, she was confronted by several burly police officers who thrust an arrest warrant in her face. With the now awakened 6 year old watching and the 2 year old wailing in the other room, she was handcuffed and led out the door to jail. She was tossed into a large cell with a couple of hookers and a junkie who spent much of the rest of that morning vomiting in the corner. The two young boys for whom the educational authorities professed such great concern were just left AT THE HOUSE — ALONE! Patty was later told that the bureaucrats from Children Services who were SUPPOSED to accompany the cops were late and, in their haste to get this dangerous miscreant behind bars, the cops just missed the fact that the Children Services people were, well, missing. The CS folks showed up an hour later to find two terrified kids, one of whom had just seen his mother hauled off in cuffs.

Patty was ultimately brought to trial under the Georgia Truancy Statutes. Her pro-bono attorney tore the school authorities to shreds and hers has been called THE case that opened the floodgates to home schooling in Georgia. Once they had all the facts, the jury didn’t take long to acquit her. I’m proud to have played a small part in that.

At Patty’s trial, a previously overlooked aspect of the government schools was put into sharp focus for those paying attention: The Director of Instruction for DeKalb County testified that the then current 7 hour school day consisted of an average of approximately 3 hours or less of instruction. At that time, Patty was devoting 4 to 5 hours a day to direct instruction.

He also as much as admitted that the REAL reason they wanted ALL these kids in school was the $3,000.00 per kid per year (I’m sure that number is MUCH higher today!) they then got from the state and federal government. Empty seats = lost funds. As in most things, follow the money.

Patty home schooled these two boys through high school.

And how did the boys turn out?

One is now a physician and the other a budding journalist.

But that now seems to be the norm for the growing legions of home schooled kids – which most likely explains why the NEA and the government school folks feel so threatened. For what it’s worth, a home schooled kid won the last National Spelling Bee.

Thomas Jefferson believed an EDUCATED PUBLIC to be the cornerstone of the system he and the other Founders TRIED to leave behind. He would NOT, I feel certain, be a big fan of the current government education system. If he returned today, he’d home school just as he did before.

As they hauled the mom off to jail, did the officers leave the children unsupervised?

My Mom knew of a lady in her small hometown in Nevada, many years ago, who homeschooled her kids. She said lady had converted an old railroad passenger car into a school room! Mom told me that her kids (one girl was a friend of hers)went to college even earlier than she and her brother and sisters did!

The one family I know fairly well that home schools has been a major success. They have two boys who went to San Jose State at around age 16. The Daughter started a the local Junior college at age 15! The fourth son is about 12.

Did I mention that the two older boys gained their Eagle ranks WHILE IN COLLEGE, i.e. they organized their Eagle Projects while pulling a full load at SJSU!

Awesome family.

I believe there’s a mistake in the write-up. The ages of the kids were 6 and 9 MONTHS, since no cop in his right mind would arrest someone for taking their eyes off of their 1st and 4th grade kids, since kids those ages, by the millions, (still, at least in some places) go to school on their own, without any help or supervision from the parents.

When I was 7 yrs old, in 1st grade, 1964, I walked door to door to sell engraved Christmas Cards, to save up for my bike.

I did that for 3 years, bought my 36" Schwinn and picked up a Newark Star Ledger Paper Route in the summer of 5th grade.

Did that for 2 years and bought my Marshall guitar amp.

My parents were asleep when I delivered my papers.

WOW, They should be in jail....LOL

Nope. The kids were 6 years and 9 years old. Watch the video at the link.

I know, of course. Just trying to illustrate my point.
