Allen West alleges Obama administration cooking the books on jobs numbers, spars with CNBC host
Daily Caller ^ | 5 Oct 2012 | Jeff Poor

On Friday, the Labor Department announced that the unemployment rate had fallen three-tenths of a percent, from 8.1 percent to 7.8 percent, a pivotal but increasingly criticized statistic suggesting the economy is improving with just a month to go until the presidential election.

General Electric CEO Jack Welch promptly accused the White House of playing fast and loose with the data to strengthen President Barack Obama’s political position, and Florida Republican Rep. Allen West echoed that criticism on Friday’s broadcast of CNBC’s “Power Lunch” with host Tyler Mathisen.

“It’s not about believing what Mr. Welch says,” West said. “It is about studying the numbers and understanding that I continue to see these inconsistencies, we continue to see revisions of the numbers upwards and downwards. When I look at these numbers compared to the workforce participation rate, which still remains at a 30-year low, when I look at these numbers of the 7.8 percent that you compare this to the U6 computation, which takes into account unemployed, underemployed and discouraged workers, that U6 computation number did not move. It stayed at 14.7 percent.”

Mathisen took issue with West’s claim and argued that the integrity of the administration’s data was not in question.

“If you would stop yelling in my ear and allow me to answer your questions, maybe we could get to the bottom of this,” West said. “When I look at the GDP numbers, which have gone from 4.1 percent and went to 1.9 percent, then it was a 1.7 percent. It got revised down just about a month ago to 1.3 percent. We’ve got numbers that are all over the place. We don’t understand really the direction this economy is going.”

Did the workforce participation rate change?” West asked. “No. It’s still a 30-year low. Did the U6 computation 14.7 percent change? No. so how is it that we had a drop of three-tenths of a percentage point on the unemployment rate if these other statistics which related to that do not change? And don’t challenge my intelligence, because I tell you, it wasn’t too long ago that we were being told that a video was the imminence for this spontaneous attack that ended up killing an ambassador [in Libya]. So there are a lot of questions that come out of this administration. I’m not talking about impeachment. I just want someone to come clean with the process and methodology because there is a lot of inconsistencies.”

West can sure make the MSM wimps squirm.

Well in a sense. They simply reduced the total number of unemployed to make the unemployment number improve.

The answer is simple. The polling people also did the UE figures.

Wish white guilt had elected someone like Mr. West instead of the POC we ended up with as our first black president.

Why do we allow our government to openly lie to us using the concocted number that is paraded around every month? It isn’t a true measure.

The U6 unemployment rate is far closer to reality (it is at 14.7% - unchanged from the previous month).

If I were Romney I would make a point in this debate of saying that he would switch to using the U6 numbers and abolish all the other methods. That all the other measurements are fundamentally dishonest and a willful attempt by the US Goverment to conceal the truth from the people.

Someone has to break this chain of lies and Romney would get huge credit if he were to do it from just about all voters

Thanks for this thread.

If we are ever going to be able to have politicians who are realistic about taxpayer dollars, we must challenge the Liberals on Wall Street.

Liberals work on Wall Street and then donate to anti-business politicians.

Rep. West did the right thing by challenging CNBC Liberal Tyler Mathisen as highlighted by this quote from the article:

” - - - Mathisen took issue with West’s claim and argued that the integrity of the administration’s data was not in question.

“If you would stop yelling in my ear and allow me to answer your questions, maybe we could get to the bottom of this,” West said. - - - “

IMHO, EVERYTHING that the damned Federal Government does and says is ALWAYS in question, ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“It’s not about believing what Mr. Welch says,” West said. “It is about studying the numbers and understanding that I continue to see these inconsistencies, we continue to see revisions of the numbers upwards and downwards...I so hope today's numbers were accurate - it spells big trouble for Obama - statistics talks about "regression to the mean", that any big deviation from a long term average eventually, and usually sooner than later, drops back toward that mean and sometimes even undershoots it to even out - so a household jobs number today of 875000, the biggest in 30 years, will certainly decrease significantly next month, and even if the payroll jobs number doubled, the overall unemployment percentage will have to jump back up by a couple of tenths of a percentage point or so - in a report released four days before the election, giving the GOP plenty of time to blitz the country with ads about the economy getting worse again.......

I don’t care which administration is charge, these numbers don’t add up. We need the truth from the BLS.

If you remove a sizable chunk of the workforce population from the employment stats along with another sizable percentage who are now claiming a disability, than these “improved” numbers don’t mean much. E.G. 100 people are of working age. 20 get signed up for disability and another 20 disappear from your view. How can anyone claim that the employment situation is improving for all when nearly 40 percent is not counted?

I want to know if the methodology has changed. If so when did it change and how did it change? I have heard people claim that it has changed and common sense seems to point that out. If employment was calculated in the same manner as in the time of Reagan, what would today’s employment rate be?

This goes to transparency and honesty in government, something we see precious little of at the moment.
