Catholic Bishop: Vote for Gay Marriage Jeopardizes Your Soul Monday, 29 Oct 2012

A vote for a candidate who supports gay marriage or abortion rights is a vote that could “put your soul in jeopardy," a Roman Catholic bishop in swing state Wisconsin has told his flock.

Bishop David Ricken, the Bishop of Green Bay, called both abortion and same sex unions “intrinsically evil” positions in a letter to parishioners.

"A well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program that contradicts fundamental contents of faith and morals,” Ricken said in the letter, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Urgent Poll: One Week Until Election Day. Obama or Romney?

As well as abortion and gay marriage, Ricken listed euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research and human cloning in his list of "non-negotiables" which he said "cannot be supported by anyone who is a believer in God or the common good of the dignity of the human person."

Ricken, 59, did not specifically tell the faithful which candidates they should support in the Oct. 24 letter, although he was clearly urging a Republican vote.

“Some candidates and one party have even chosen some of these as their party’s or their personal political platform. To vote for someone in favor of these positions means that you could be morally ‘complicit’ with these choices which are intrinsically evil. This could put your own soul in jeopardy.”

Actually, you can reasonably infer he wants the faithful not to vote for Obama/Biden.

Other than that, they could vote for Romney/Ryan, for some other candidate on the ballot, for a write-in, or skip the top of the ticket.

NOT voting to promote abortion, sodomy/pseudogamy, etc. is a moral requirement. Who you do vote for (if anybody) is a prudential judgment.

We were with Archbishop Chaput today. He said clearly it would be a sin not to vote in this election and it would be a serious sin to vote against the commandments of God.I shook his hand.:)

Honest question: Are protestants and evangelicals as antiabortion as the Catholic Church?

Are their pastors/preachers making statements like this today?

The bishops need to say that gay “marriage” is wrong, not because the church or the bible says it is, but because it is against human nature.

Just like Catholics - some are, some aren't. My pastor included very direct language against abortion in his sermon today.

Any church that believes the Bible is the Word of God is anti-abortion, preaches that homosexuality is a sin, and that Jesus was NOT a socialist.

The so-called mainline denominations such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American, the Presbyterian Church US, most Methodists, and others that have abandoned the true Christian faith in favor of liberal ideas are all in for abortion, homosexuality, and socialism.

Assuming you are Roman Catholic, may I ask you a question?

It appears that many Catholics ignore the church’s teachings on birth control and abortion (given the low birth rate in Catholic countries and that many Catholic politicians are pro-abortion), just how much influence does a sermon like this one have on the average Catholic voter?

Good question. I’m not certain, but anecdotally, Catholics like myself are ok with certain birth control like condoms but will never, never, never vote for someone we believe will further the cause of abortion. i realize Romney’s been on both sides of this issue, but at this time, he realizes his support is coming from the Right and is not likely to waiver as president.
