Obamacare vs. Jobs: The law discourages the hiring of full-time employees
The National Review ^ | November 8, 2012 | Jillian Kay Melchior

Job seekers will soon have a harder time finding full-time work, thanks to Obamacare. As of 2014, the law will attempt to force employers to provide insurance — but in doing so, it will have the unintended effect of making part-time employees more desirable than full-timers.

That’s because if a business with more than 49 full-time employees fails to offer insurance coverage, it will be required to pay a fine. And the fine will apply starting not with the 50th employee, but with the 31st. At $2,000 per employee after the first 30, these fines add up fast. A business that surpasses the threshold by just one full-time employee will face $40,000 each year in penalties.

Businesses that can easily substitute part-time for full-time labor — in particular restaurants, hotels, and retailers — will have a strong incentive to do so. The Wall Street Journal reports that Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s, Red Lobster, and Olive Garden are already planning to hire part-timers instead of full-timers at some or all of their locations. Other employers will restrict their current full-time employees to 30 hours a week so that they will be considered part-time under the law. And, of course, some businesses will opt to stay smaller. France provides an instructive example: There, 50 employees is the magic threshold for whether labor regulations apply. And — no surprise — the country “has more than 2.4 times as many firms with 49 employees as with 50,” Jed Graham notes in Investor’s Business Daily...

And why would a small business ever want to grow?

No Problem!

The regime can just change the law to include part-time employees.

What about Congress you say...well they didn’t need Congress to pass the law, they won’t need Congress to change the law, where ever and how ever the regime sees fit.

Deem it to be done, so let it be written, so let it be done.

That’s just how it is done, by all dictators, in all communist countries.

If employers must hire 14 29-hour employees to do the work formerly done by 10 full timers, the unemployment rate will drop, even if hours worked stays the same.

Win-Win, Baby!

The majority of those part-time employees are getting what they voted for, and I feel no sympathy for them at all. As for the rest, it’s a shame they have to suffer because of the greed of their peers.

As if kids today didn’t have enough problems. Now they’ll have to have 2 part-time jobs to survive and pay the obamacare fines for not having health insurance.

Elections have consequences kids.

This is true, but I expect there's a baseline cost to a company to hire an employee, so they can't just replace all the full time workers with more part time workers for the same cost.

Also, having progressive income taxes means that more part time workers could end up reducing the total amount of income tax paid, further adding to the deficit.

Don’t worry, the Democrat machine will blame all of Obama’s, and more specifically, Democrats failures on House Republicans. In fact, it is already happening.

“OK but what will they do when the money runs out?”

For committed socialists, there is always another big government solution whenever the next crisis arrives. Keep hope alive, etc. Plus, ruling in hell is better than serving in heaven. An elite party directing huddled masses is a dream state for the Marxist.

Obamacare is going to kill the economy like the wrecking ball it was meant to be. 0 knows this. He is going to destroy this nation until the Obamabots wake up and realize this is intentional. Then they are going to turn oh him and we are going to find out the reasons for the new DHS vehicles, ammo, and microwave skin cookers. It would be fun to watch idiot liberals get zapped by ‘em though...; )

OK but what will they do when the money runs out?

historically, they start killing people.

The major difference between the USA and almost all of the bankrupt, rioting countries of europe is that for the present time, we are armed.

When the one gets to change the SCOTUS and they re-write the 2nd amendment, we will then see how many patriots are willing to sacrifice their comfort and lives for what we once had.

My guess is not enough to make a difference.

Some of us will be dead, but most will willingly turn in their guns and face a fate worse than death.

Being old can put a better perspective on the value of honor and death instead of a living slavery.

The last several generations have no real knowledge of the USA that I grew up in and wanted to leave for the future generations; we tried but too many want too much of other people's stuff, and too many were too pure to vote for Romney...we all will pay the terrible price for human greed and arrogance.
