Why Israel has no Sandy Hooks

A thoughtful piece at Tablet by Liel Leibovitz on why a country brimming with guns, that’s been under siege for more than 60 years, almost never sees the sort of mass shootings that the U.S. does. Spoiler alert: It’s not because the gun laws are unusually strict, or strictly enforced.

If the United States, itself awash with weapons, wishes to benefit from Israel’s experience, it must make sure it learns the right lessons. The first and most universal one is that ever more stringent gun control is bad policy: As is the case with drugs, as was the case with liquor during Prohibition, the strict banning of anything does little but push the market underground into the hands of criminals and thugs. Rather than spend fortunes and ruin lives in a futile attempt to eradicate every last trigger in America, we would do well to follow Israel’s example and educate gun owners about their rights and responsibilities, so as to foster a culture of sensible and mindful gun ownership…

In Israel, still a somewhat socialist country, mental health services are ready available, for free, to anyone...

People need to read the comments from actual Israelis after the article. Israel is NOT the panacea we are looking for here. Their idea of having armed guards at the schools is really the only thing that is even close to relevent to our situation.

You are correct. Israel's gun control laws pertaining to civilians aren't much different than New York City's. Applicants must pass a comprehensive background check, undergo rigorous training and demonstrate a need to own one before they're given permission to possess a single firearm, typically a handgun (settlers who abide by all of the above are allowed a single semi-auto rifle and 50 rounds of ammunition). Israel appears armed to the teeth because they have compulsory military service and soldiers are required to carry their weapons with them almost everywhere they go. But once they leave the military, they,ve got to turn 'em in.

People who think Israel is some kind of RKBA paradise would find themselves mistaken if they actually researched the laws. In Israel, gun ownership is a privilege, not a right.

A society that condones murdering 3000 innocent children a day in the womb has no business talking about gun control.

The WASHINGTONIANS from the blue blood country club faction are busy heading for the tall grass lest they lose their seat in DC, DISNEYLAND FOR BUSYBODY'S ON POWER TRIPS.

COMMIE SEX PERVERT EXTORTION RACKET VIA THE IRS BABY KILLER CONTROL.

Let the teachers at each school decide if they want to arm. Couple this with school vouchers, so parents can decide whether they want their kids to go to an armed school or gun free school. I know which I would want for my son.

Great platform for 2014!

If teachers do not want to arm, parents should be able to volunteer for one day a month, etc.

Certainly. I’m just pointing out that there’s no cure-all or panacea.

Nice straw man you've got there. Who on this forum has called for a cure-all, or a panacea?

Nobody ever says, "Hey, lets adopt this panacea and try out that cure-all." But to say "Israel has no Sandy Hooks" implies for a lot of people that Israel has no mass shootings and that whatever they do over there would prevent mass shootings here if we did the same.

Not true. Mass shootings have happened there as they happen here. You can argue that something they do makes incidents less frequent or the body count lower, but you can't honestly say "Israel has no Sandy Hooks [i.e. no mass shooting sprees]."

Maybe you think people are too smart to think that something will prevent killings of that sort and that that goes without saying, but not everybody is and it doesn't. If there's a "straw man" in there, blame the person who wrote the headline or the article.

Instead of getting hung up on the title, did you read the original article in The Tablet? The content speaks for itself.

I particularly like the photograph in the article, and others that have been posted. I wonder what would have happened if that psycho loser kid tried his reign of terror in these groups?
