Bill Brady and Mark Curran: Licensing undocumented immigrants will make state safer
The State Journal -Register ^ | Dec 28, 2012 | By Bill Brady and Mark Curran

This nation is a melting pot of immigrants, both legal and not. Our state is no different.

We celebrate the ethnic diversity of our population and welcome those who come to this country and pursue citizenship, and whose work and effort have helped make this country great.

We also have a continuing concern with the numbers of immigrants in this country who are here without any legal authority. Many of them have come to America from our southern neighbor seeking work and a better life for their families. Another large percentage of the undocumented immigrants came to our country legally from probably every country on earth and have overstayed their visas.

The question of immigration reform is an emotional one, and one in which the federal government must play the lead role. It is a national concern, and yet it is also an issue in the 50 states individually.

As a nation, we must secure our borders, and we must provide a wider door to citizenship to those who come to our country legally. As a state, we must also recognize the impact of an estimated 250,000 undocumented immigrant drivers on Illinois’ streets and highways and on the cost of car insurance to family budgets.

It doesn’t allow the license holder to use that license as identification to register to vote, to board an airplane or to purchase a firearm. It requires undocumented immigrants to prove their identity, be tested and purchase insurance to drive legally on our streets and highways...I'm with this poster...Just how are illegal immigrants supposed to prove their identity in order to get a license? I moved from Southern California in 2003. In order to change my license from CA to Illinois I had to provide a certified copy of my birth certificate and my social security card (not just the number). How in blazes is an illegal going to do that? Or, like everything else, are we going to give them a pass on that also. Having lived in Orange County for 37 years, I will tell you flat out, that they will not obtain auto insurance just because they have a license. If they do buy insurance to register a vehicle, they cancel it as soon as they have tags in hand. I'm telling you , folks, we're just asking for more trouble and more illegal immigrants.

These people make me sick. America is going bankrupt and these lowlife politicians want to spend billions of dollars on people who have no right being here. Our children are already struggling to find jobs without adding wage depressing illegals to the competition. Every young American should be marching around DC with pitchforks over the politicians selling away their future. It will be way too late to stop the destruction of our country by the time most Americans realize what is happening.

No background checks (criminal history, narco or terrorist ties, multiple identities, etc.). No quarantine.

What could possibly go wrong?

Watch any requirement for a distinctive license get removed by the illegal lovers. I live in Washington and illegals here are so confident in their status that they get their licenses with their real names on them. Even after deportation for violent crimes they come right back to Washington, go to the DMV and get a new license without any fear of a background check.

I know this because the agency I work for gets BOLOs from ICE and most include the guy's brand new driver's license.

Oh, I get it!

Then they’ll be documented, but still illegal.

>> As a state, we must also recognize the impact of an estimated 250,000 undocumented immigrant drivers on Illinois’ streets and highways and on the cost of car insurance to family budgets. <<

We have 250,000 illegal aliens on Illinois streets? How can that be? We’re nowhere near the Mexican border. Perrybots told me over and over again during last year’s primary that the ONLY reason Texas is flooded with illegal aliens is because it’s a border state. < sarcasm >

>> It doesn’t allow the license holder to use that license as identification to register to vote <<

Motor-voter laws say otherwise. I’m election judge. How do you explain the dozens of “voters” I met during early voting in Chicago who could barely speak four words of English, yet they’re all duly registered, “active Chicago voters” according to the computer database? Last time I checked, you MUST speak English at a sufficient level to become a citizen, and you MUST be a citizen to vote. Could it be actions by our state legislators are making it easier for illegal aliens to register to vote? Hmm.

>> As a legislator, I’ve supported other Illinois responses to what is a national immigration question. I have opposed this specific kind of legislation in the past. <<

You were right then, you are wrong now.

>> Untested, uninsured immigrants are driving today. Those drivers cost $64 million annually in uninsured damage claims that other policy holders must cover. In 2011, 42 percent of all fatal crashes in Illinois involved an unlicensed driver. In Lake County, 28 percent of all motorists booked for traffic offenses in the last year were undocumented immigrants who could not get licenses, burdening our public safety system. <<

Yet in the same breathe, when other politicians want to reward illegals, they claim the illegals they want to help are all “law-abiding”. (what an oxymoron that is). We’ve heard countless sob stories about these “straight-A” illegal alien students whose “only crime is that their parents brought them here illegally as a child” and about those patriotic, all-American neighbors who have been here 25 years, speak English, pay taxes, NEVER commit a crime, have children and grandchildren here, and are model Americans, but gosh DARN, can’t get a break cuz they’re “undocumented”.

Here, you concede illegal aliens are ROUTINELY breaking the law and drive to work every day without a driver’s license. Which is it? Are our illegal aliens “law-abiding” or regularly breaking the law? You politicians need to make up your minds.

>> Our goal is not to encourage more illegal immigration to Illinois. <<

Whether or not that is the goal (it is certainly the goal of Democrats, as it makes Illinois more and more Democrat), that will be the end result.

>> Instead, it is to promote safe driving and to unburden licensed motorists from the financial cost to them resulting from a collision with an uninsured motorist. <<

This legislation won’t do that. There is no clause requiring the illegals to PROVE they are insured in order to be eligible for a license. It’s full of loopholes.

>> We also have a continuing concern with the numbers of immigrants in this country who are here without any legal authority <<

I have a “continuing concern” for politicians who pander to them. Scratch Bill Brady and Mark Curran off the “2014 statewide hopefuls” list. Brady ran twice before so he probably wasn’t going to pursue a third bid, but Mark Curran… what could have been if you didn’t squander it away. You can forget about me supporting you during a primary campaign for Attorney General. If I wanted an Attorney General who rewards law-breakers, I’d just re-elect Lisa. Et tu, Sheriff?

Another point can be made many illegals they cannot read, write or understand english. Are they going to give tests in Spainsh ? A lot of good drivers license do when all the road signs are in english and there will be drivers who can only understand something be it wrote in Spainsh.

When I took a class, to become a deputy registrar, I asked the instructor, “If we register someone who says that he or she was born in a different country, do we need to ask for proof that the immigrant is a U.S. citizen?” The instructor said, “No, you can just take their word for it.” That’s probably why many voters can’t speak English. Some of them aren’t U.S. citizens, and they lie, to register.
