The House Should Adjourn (they're back on Thursday anyway)

Posted on 01/01/2013 10:24:52 AM PST by cotton1706

The House should just adjourn. The president can no longer threaten them with calling them back into session since they're back on Thursday anyway and the Senate cannot prevent them from adjourning since the current session is over in less than the Constitutional three day requirement where the Senate can object.

If the House adjourns, the Senate bill dies and cannot act again on any tax bill until it receives something, anything from the House. And all the republicas senators who voted for McConnell's "compromise" bill can reap the political rewards of voting to increase taxes while getting nothing for it.

It's the best option. Mr. Speaker, adjourn the House!

I’m watching CSPAN and it does not appear that the House is likely to pass the Senate’s POS cliff bill anytime soon. Plus they are negating Obama’s EO giving the Congress and all the Federal employees a raise.

So little spine, so little time.

Well if they don’t pass it by noon on Thursday, it amounts to the same thing as adjournment. All pending bills from a previous congress die. And the Senate cannot just repass it becuase all revenue bills must originate in the House (the Senate last night amended a pending House bill).

The House can then actually legislate, not be forced into an up or down vote at the very last minute.

Bonehead and Cantor are working with Pelosi to determine how many
Rat votes she can supply. Then Bonehead and Cantor will strong arm
the rest from the Rino Monkeys. I am hoping many Rino Monkeys
vote for this bill. Especially southern Rino Monkeys.
Can u say primary opponents in 2014?

If there are two people I can’t stand, it’s Boehner and Cantor. I used to like Eric Cantor but once he moved up in the leadership, he became an entirely different person! RINO’s all!

Sadly, I have become convinced that if we sent a diamond to Washington, that cesspool would have it polished into a turd in only a few years.

My income taxes do go up with this bill by more than I want to think about, but at least my AMT won’t go up by an extra $11,000 for 2012....

I say: pass it then fight again in round 2.

The fly in the ointment is that BONER MUST pass the bill in this congress because he cannot in the next, what with the loss of republican seats and the influx of freshman republican congressmen beholden to Tea Party principles. Next congress the number of republicans voting against will skyrocket rendering Boner impotent.

********
No disrespect intended but what reasons might there be to hope that Pubbies will engage in a fight? They are merely spectators satisfied to have seats in the grandstands with a good view of the field and where they can shout at the opposing team. That’s about all they really do. There’s just no fight in them.

If Pubbies had any spine they would have said NO DISCUSSIONS on tax cuts until we see proposals for meaningful spending cuts. No cuts, no legislation. Instead, Boner and company publically negotiated with themselves! They are a hapless bunch of losers.

Let me make this simple and easy - the CONGRESS should adjourn and stay adjourned. They’re pretty much a humongous waste of time and money, anyway!

Laws made in a hurry are bad laws. (Ya gotta pass it to find out what's in it.)

Large omnibus laws are bad laws too.

I have to agree with your “hapless losers” comment . But this bill still saves me $11,000 on 2012 AMT; it just delays the 2013 fight, but is a “win” for me with no 2012 AMT increase.

The Republicans lack courage to tell the truth about the perils of our debt and spending fiasco. Fewer than 1% of the population really understand the magnitude of the spending problem using honest, GAAP accounting. That deficit is more like $7 trillion per year, and the balance sheet is horrific.

I’m pretty sure the AMT relief will help me as well but I’m not smart enough to figure it out right now and will have to wait until we visit our tax guy. You are way ahead of me in the accounting department. :)

Agree with your point that Republicans don’t have the courage to “tell the truth about the perils of our debt and spending fiasco”. They have been party to the reckless spend-athon that has put the country on the edge of a financial abyss, no question about it.

One thing about Democrats I admire: they play to win. With a few exceptions, Republicans are just grandstanders who are content to go along with business as usual.
