Federal workers brace for furloughs

Federal workers are bracing for furloughs that could start to take place in the next few months if Congress doesn't replace massive budget cuts scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Even as a fiscal cliff deal was beginning to emerge Monday afternoon, lawmakers and the president still lacked agreement to stop measures carving some $110 billion in spending power from federal budgets each year over the next decade through automatic cuts.

President Obama dubbed the sequester cuts akin to "using an ax instead of a scalpel" on the budget in a Monday speech, while announcing a deal was close.

"Some of these spending cuts that Congress has said will automatically go into effect have an impact on our Defense Department, but they (also) have an impact on things like Head Start," an educational program for poor children, Obama said. "That is a piece of business that still has to be taken care of."

The move, called a sequester, would force agencies to cut some 8% to 10% from their budgets. Several departments, including Defense, NASA and Agriculture, started to tell employees on Dec. 20 that they might have to resort to furloughs...

Forget about congress holding the purse, imagine what a tax revolt could do.

Oh, it's just so sad when that happens!

Hey, why don't you guys cry us a river. While you're at it, why don't you give your union rep a call. I'm sure they'll fix everything. You federal workers who voted for Obama a second time have made your bed...now sleep in it!

Has anything actually been fully passed or ordered to stop the so-called fiscal cliff? If not, why haven’t all of the requirements been enacted? It’s January 1, 2013.

I was thinking the same thing. ya, they might go few weeks with out pay on their ass (but they can apply for unemployment right?) but they will get back pay when it’s figured out.

They win no matter what.

Government workers should suffer like those in the private sector. And the president, vice president and members of congress shouldn’t get paid until a sound fiscal budget is in place. The crap being considered by the House isn’t it

It will take an axe, and maybe a chain saw to straighten out the overbloated Government we have.

This again?

The first step should be to ditch the baseline budgeting. Congress should have to review all spending, every year, and the budget should be set according to the amount of money actually taken in by the treasury. Unless there are extraordinary circumstances (e.g. an act of war), the government shouldn’t be able to borrow anything.

Of course, getting Congress to do what’s right is like trying to defy gravity.

“Furlough” — temporary absence from work.
“Lay off” — supposed to be temporary, but often permanent.
“Fired” — permanent severance.

Don’t worry, federal darlings, your furlough may last a week or two. Enjoy your time off (which will most likely come with full back pay).

They get severak days “laid-off” then the pol’s have them come back with full back pay. Sounds like a paid vacation to me. Always happens. Losers and societal parasites. Fire them all.

In 1993, the socialist Premier of Ontario, Boob Rae, required Ontario swivel servants to take 12 days of unpaid ‘vacation’ annually. They became known as ‘Rae Days’.

Perhaps the furlough time can be called ‘Bama time’ or ‘Zero time’.

Don’t waste time with ‘forced unpaid leave’.

Just no longer have paid holidays.

Like the private sector used to do.

I used to tell my laborers - Work 4th of Jul, Labor Day etc and we will call it a paid holiday.
No work. No pay.

Used to be you went to the private sector for the money, you went to the ‘Government’ for leave, retirement, security, paid holidays and your actual pay was less.

Now you work for the Govt and get all of the above PLUS equal or more money.

Force Bernanke to create even more money out of nothing to lend to the government?

I was hoping to get furloughed rather than the cave-in we just got.
