The second half was close because Nick Satan uncharacteristically let up.
Notre Dame looked like a shell of themselves in that game, and it had much to do with the time off and inexperience preparing for a game with six weeks off. Alabama, and Saban know how to prepare for a game with this lead time, and they looked better than they did in the regular season. Notre Dame’s D looked like they hadn’t seen a game speed running back or receiver ever before.
Alabama always had the upper hand in that game, but the first half was just a mess for Notre Dame. The fact that they were able to score in the second half is to their credit. Of course with their lead, Alabama certainly dailed it down on offense, especially in the 4th quarter. I hated to see that game go the way it did because Notre Dame was better than that. They have real talent on that team, and it should have been a reasonably competitive game, at least for awhile. As it was, that was just ugly to watch.

1. Manti is extremely gullible and totally innocent, the victim of a cruel "catfishing" hoax perpetrated by a group of acquaintances.
2. Manti cynically masterminded a sick PR stunt in order to boost his profile and Heismann chances.
3. Manti is a closeted gay in a relationship with the guy behind the fake girlfriend who used this as a ploy to hide his sexuality.
4. Some combination of the above.
I think it's 4. My hypothesis is that Manti had a fairly shallow online relationship with the "girlfriend,"--actually some buddies jerking his chain--which is why he didn't realize she was fake. The media gets wind of a heart-rending story and runs with it. Suddenly, the dying girlfriend angle is working in Manti's favor and he has a reason to be a willing dupe and embellish, even if he suspected it was a hoax. The media of course wants a good tale and has plenty of motive to embellish and not investigate deeply. The gay closet-case angle is juicy, but it's known Manti had other real-life girlfriends so it doesn't seem like he would need to make one up expressly as a cover. By the way, Deadspin, the blog that broke the hoax story, is run by a bunch bitter Gawker Media types who have their own axe to grind. I must admit I'm basing this theory partly on stereotypes of Samoans as typically unsophisticated.
How does Manti’s fantasy affect his football? How has it affected his scholastic performance and why would it matter to anyone other than his mama and maybe his counselor? How has it affected other students’ performance? Is it, in fact, being hyped to increase interest in Notre Dame football?
If Te’o is that gullible then he should be the next contestant on the Joe Schmo Show.

Bull. ND got exposed for what they were. A fraud. They lived off publicity from the a loving ESPN and press all year. They barely beat Pittsburgh and that after Pitt blew a 20-6 lead and missed an OT chip shot FG. Pitt was mauled by an poor Ole Miss team in Birmingham bowl. Alabama was a superior team that handed the fraud their butts. Ta’O got shown for what he was, slow, and not able to handle those big OL or the Bama RBs. He will be a flop in the NFL.

Spot On 100% CORRECT! How does a #1 ranked team enter a Championship game according to the oddsmakers and as Herbstreit described them "a huge underdog" if not for a low information, biased press?
And a mediocre, at best, linebacker Te'O gets 7 awards and a runner-up to the Heisman Trophy ONLY because he played for ND.
Just proves what my Dad always said about ND: Notre Dame could put 11 paraplegic nuns in uniform and some asshat sportswriter would still rank them in the top 10.
