James Taylor: Let’s sacrifice a little liberty for safety
Hot Air ^ | January 22, 2013 | Ed Morrissey

Oh, it’s fun to pick on celebrities who don’t know much about the issues on which they’re asked to pontificate — and at least James Taylor has the honesty to preface his answer to The Daily Caller’s Nicholas Ballasy with an admission of ignorance. In fact, he does so twice, when Nicholas asks him about Obama’s continuation of George Bush’s drone policy and on the “executive orders” Obama promised on gun control (actually executive actions, most or all of which don’t require actual EOs). At some point, it’s easy to feel a little sympathy for Taylor, who must be thinking that he’d rather follow Laura Ingraham’s advise to just “shut up and sing.”

Being a good sport, Taylor provides an answer — which won’t exactly endear him to anyone outside of Obama’s orbit:

(VIDEO AT LINK)

Addressing the issue of gun control, singer-songwriter James Taylor told The Daily Caller that Americans ‘need to make some sacrifice[s] to our freedoms’ in order to keep children safe. Following his performance at President Obama’s second inauguration, TheDC asked Taylor if he agreed with Obama’s executive actions on gun control. ‘I think the nation is very divided on gun control,’ Taylor told TheDC, ‘but I think the majority of us feel strongly — even the majority of gun owners feel strongly — that we need to make some sacrifice[s] to our freedoms, if that’s the way to put it. We need to make some sacrifices to what we might want to have, in order to safeguard our children.’

Since Taylor admits to a rather significant level of ignorance on the topic, it’s not quite clear what he means on this...

Kumbayuh. My guess is that Charlie Daniels didn't make the short list for the Inaugural taffy pull.

While this is an idiotic statement I remember a LOT here did the SAME thing in support of the Patriot Act. Equally disgusting.

How would he react to “4 down in OHIO?” Should the government be the only ones shooting when the time comes???
Simple question.

LOL. James was never the brightest bulb, but he did write this:

The government boys they came for Machine Gun

And took the poor boy away

They stuck him in a hole in Leavenworth prison

Where he lived until his dying day

James Taylor isn’t jumping up and down and trying to be an “activist” or anything

Bull

This is not the first time he's made political comments. Look, this is America, everyone has a right to their opinion, but don't say he was cornered into giving it as he's done so on numerous occasions.

I admire his recovery from heroin addiction but he hasn’t thought things through. Heroin was illegal but that didn’t prevent him from almost ODing (by his own admission) on multiple occasions. If drug laws don’t prevent addicts from buying drugs, why would gun laws prevent criminals from obtaining them?

I think Republicans should openly, and often, discuss the many benefits of controlling TV and newspapers.

I think we should also look at modifying some other amendments have lead to the current chaos.

16th amendment re: income taxes

19th amendment re: women voting

26th amendment re: 18 year olds voting

The 15th amendment might also need some updating to reflect current realities that people that don't contribute to the can effectively vote themselves a paycheck. Although that may be addressed under the 16th.

Agree. At least James sang America The Beautiful at the Inauguration, unlike Beyoncee who pulled a Milli Vanilli on the National Anthem.

She did? Coulda fooled me. That didn't sound like an song I am familiar with.

Don’t forget the 17th: direct election of US senators, which has done incalculable damage to state sovereignty

He advocates progressive tyranny.

And like so may others of his ilk, he never fancies that he'd be on the downside of it. History says otherwise.

I got in an argument with my mother in law over gun control. She of course mouthed the usual “nobody needs an assault weapon” for self defense. Now usually I bite my tongue with her because after all she’s my wife’s mother but this time I snapped. It went something along the lines of this:

Number one, if you don’t like guns DON’T OWN ONE but don’t take away my second amendment rights. Number two, if four gang bangers approach you some night you’ll be raped and killed. I on the other hand have two bullets per gang member with two to spare. Number three, an assault rifle is a fully automatic rifle. Don’t try and strip me of my rights when you don’t even know what the definition of the thing it is you’re railing against.

She shut up real quick.
