Youre better off reading the transcript at Newsbusters than watching the clip, which, for some reason, excludes two of Matthewss references to flashbacks. Halfway through it, I thought he was using flashback and nightmare as some sort of extremely ill-advised metaphor for what McCain was feeling yesterday while interrogating Hagel. Tasteless, yes, but just a metaphor. Quote:
A resentment not against the North Vietnamese who imprisoned and toured him all those years, not against George W. Bush and his political henchmen who tried to stain McCains reputation back in 2000, but against a guy who fought against fear and rallied against wounds just like he did in the same army of Americas long nightmare in Vietnam, Chuck Hagel. A nightmare by the way whose flashbacks must haunt still the mind and heart of John Sidney McCain.
If you strain very hard you can read that nightmare/flashback line metaphorically, i.e. that Vietnam was a nightmare for the country at large and that McCain, like anyone who lived through it, cant help letting his views of the Iraq war be colored by it. But no, thats not what Matthews means. He goes on to say of McCain, Im absolutely convinced were watching a flashback and, later, It looks like a flashback. McCain is so angry. (That second line is featured in the second clip below.) He obviously means it in the literal sense. Hes talking about an honest-to-goodness, post-torture POW PTSD flashback as an explanation for McCains irritation over Hagels filibustering at a hearing. This isnt the first time the left has insinuated for political advantage that McCain might be mental, although typically they frame it in terms of worries about his temper precisely because they dont want to be on the hook for a smear this nasty. Not Matthews, though...

“He cooled his heels in the Peace Corps while better men fought and died in his place over in Vietnam.”
Amen.
One of my best friends couldn’t cope with his flashbacks and killed himself.I would so like to have a private conversation with Matthews right now.
Of all the liberal media jackasses, Mathews is the jackiest Ass of them all. That is a very high bar to surpass too.
Matthews is the journalistic equivalent of Roseanne Barr.
Vietnam ‘flashbacks’ could be a sign of psychosis, but leg tingles certainly are. Unless it’s a ‘man-love’ thing. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Chris.
1st Cav? I was there 1971-72 in the remnant element, Task Force Garry Owen. Flew Hueys.
Matthews is a worthless liberal creep. Eats cheese with Jane Fonda to this day.
Matthews is spinning McCain as a tough, angry, over-the-top Senate committee interrogator because McCain protected, soft-pedaled, praised, simpered and boot-licked Hillary when investigating Benghazi.
Wait a minute, you say - what does Hagels have to do with Hillary? How could Matthews conflate the two completely different McCain behaviors, at two completely different hearings, and expect anyone to confuse the two, let alone believe one being the standard that contradicts the other?
To which I reply, child, child, child, what part of NLP Machine don’t you understand?
Chrisse really is a vile human being.
Chrissie really is a vile human being.
Sort of no-class crap you’d expect from the likes of Matthews.....
I’m a few minutes late - nothing more to be said. I’ll just say ditto.
Matthews is a scumbag, Matthews is a dick.
“One of my best friends couldn’t cope with his flashbacks and killed himself.”
If you’ve ever been miserable, and you want to get an idea of what your friend went through, multiply by ten and pray for him and every time Mr. Mathews and his Progressive cohorts make a gum-snapping, wise-guy, adolescent remark about “flashbacks”, remember your friend.
(Mr. Mathews served in the Peace Corp in 1968(Wikipedia),
during the height of the Viet Nam War; there was a reason for that.)
IMHO
