Housing Pickle: Food Stamp Growth Outstrips Employment Growth
Confounded Interest ^ | 02/04/2013 | Anthony B. Sanders

One of the most important measures for housing is employment. And while payrolls are SLOWLY improving,

but food stamps are growing at a much faster rate.

This is from Bloomberg Briefs:

“An ongoing concern is that growth in jobs continues to be dwarfed by the surge in food stamps. During the first 10 months of 2012 there were 1.01 million new additions to the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a 2.2 percent increase. During the same period, the number of nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 1.5 million, a 1.1 percent gain.

The results from the end of the recession in June 2009 are even more staggering. The number of food stamp recipients has rocketed 30 percent since mid-2009, yet the number of nonfarm payroll jobs has inched up a mere 2 percent over that same period. Considering the composition of those jobs – in low wage industries – the household sector is clearly suffering.”

The growth in food stamps correlates with the longer-term decline in wages and salaries (as a percentage of GDP).

It is hard to have a traditional owner-occupied housing recovery under these conditions.

Particularly with GDP growth at -0.5% in Q4 2012 and forecast to be +1.5% in Q1 2013.

In my day taking welfare was a shame. If it was necessary it was done with the hat brim down and the STRONG desire to cease as soon as humanly possible.

Now it is a birthright.

Now people can’t afford to feed their families. This is not just people who live off the govt their entire lives. The only jobs out there are jobs that people can’t feed their families on.
An awful lot of good people lost jobs since 2008.

There are a LOT of people taking food stamps who DO NOT NEED them....ie...college students, single people, etc.

I’ not sure why you felt the need to chime in and throw in caps. I did state that the people on food stamps are not all people who have lived off the govt their entire lives. You see i acknowledged that there’s a problem.
So i have no idea why you needed to make your statement. Do you think then that of the millions who have gone onto food stamps since the 2008 financial disaster have found great jobs not in places named Starbucks or WalMart? So they’re making oodles of cash and and simply stealing from everyone else?
The amount of rancor here sometimes at people who are truly in need, the sense of urgency with which they’re attacked as freeloaders is one of the many reasons we’ll never take back the presidency.

Yes. so a student working part time while in school doesn’t make enough to keep a roof over their head and eat. That never happens. And single folks? They’re what? immune to losing a job? Its more socially acceptable to eat out of a garbage pail if you’re single?
Note that once more i didn’t need to resort to caps to make my point.
Oh the last time i was tested for comprehension was was back in HS. i recall the 96% at somewhere around 800/900 wpm.

UH....I was single, (and a working student, too,) with a child once....I found a way to live without resorting to services...don’t lecture me. Most students can live with others, INCLUDING PARENTS, but NO, the government would rather they be dependent on them. Go away. Done with you. You don’t get it. No, you don’t resort to caps, and you don’t capitalize “I” either.....sheesh. Again, just go away. Get a life.

Here's how I see it.........If I could make $26k + medical-housing-food...not working.

Why would I go to work 5 days a week making $27,28,29k a year?

Frankly I don't blame anyone for taking the "low hanging fruit" the Feds offer.

But the system is badly broken...

There's little pain for people making horrible choices...( too many kids to support on their wages..., too big of house, too many toys, too many this, and that...)Too many seem to think everyone else should bail them out.

I'm about done bailing out those that are continually leeching. I see too many folks getting some Gov assistance that from the outside looking in....don't need it.

I know some folks that truly need help...but I'd guess the majority don't.

That's my opinion.

>>Now people can’t afford to feed their families. This is not just people who live off the govt their entire lives.<<

They can, they won’t.

When you stand in line in the grocery store and see people use EBTs to pay for junk food AND with a $300 weave AND a Coach purse that is all you need to know.

And yes, every single person on the dole should feel extreme shame to propel them out of it. The loss of shame is what built the welfare state.

My local paper is chock full of jobs for people who are willing to work.

>>Yes. so a student working part time while in school doesn’t make enough to keep a roof over their head and eat. <<

Then he/she should be working and not in school. And I lived through college the old-fashioned way — ramen noodles, home-made hamburger helper on a part-time income. No one of my generation got food stamps in college and yet we survived (best damn Life Lesson ever).

>>That never happens. And single folks? They’re what? immune to losing a job? Its more socially acceptable to eat out of a garbage pail if you’re single?<<

Hyperbole is not argumentation. Single people have it easier b/c they have more flexibility. Unemployment is mostly a factor of bad life decisions and bad planning.

On the Internet, no one knows you’re a dog.

False dichotomy. Look it up.

>> the sense of urgency with which they’re attacked as freeloaders is one of the many reasons we’ll never take back the presidency.<<

If buying the Presidency with free stuff is the cost, we don’t DESERVE the Presidency. Or rather, the Presidency doesn’t deserve a Conservative at the helm. It can stay with the Socialists who espouse the policies you seem to admire so.
