Wendy’s might close up to 130 restaurants

As Wendy’s Co. continues its effort to modernize restaurants, up to 130 U.S. restaurants could be closed in the coming year because they are not making enough money to be worthy of being remodeled or rebuilt.

The news came yesterday as the Dublin-based company announced earnings for the fourth quarter and full year.

Wendy’s is beginning the third year of its Image Activation program to raze, rebuild or remodel nearly half of its 600 company-owned stores by the end of 2015.

So far, the Dublin-based fast-food restaurant has rebuilt 58 company-owned stores since 2011, and it plans to rebuild or remodel another 100 company stores and 100 franchised stores this year.

The first year, the rebuilt stores “drove average sales increases of 25 percent, and those results continue to hold today,” Emil Brolick, the company’s chairman and CEO, told securities analysts during a conference call....

As of December 30, 2012, the Company had approximately 44,000 employees, including approximately 2,800 salaried employees and approximately 41,200 hourly employees. We believe that our employee relations are satisfactory.

What I want to know is this: Who is the Redhead that is featured in their commercials these days? What a beautiful woman.

Around 30 years ago, during my last year of grad school, I was about broke. I discovered Wendys had a salad bar with all kinds of good things including a couple of kinds of meat.

It was only a dollar and all you wanted to eat. I basically skipped breakfast and Supper and stuffed myself with salad at lunch.

I am sure they dropped it tho I haven’t been there in years. Just too much stuff for a dollar and others must have figured out the same thing I did.

Wendy’s has gotten left behind in the pallet curve. They used to be one of the better fastfood joints, still not really good but on the top tier. In recent years a new breed of fastfood has come up with much better food. Wendy’s went from one of the best to one of the worst without changing anything, they stood still too long.

That will shrink. Especially the salaried and full time employees. They might actually increase the number of employees overall by hiring more part timers to cover the hours they need to be staffed.

If you want a burger, made the way it is supposed to be, there is only one place. In and Out. Their motto is ( Flavor you can taste, cleanliness you can see). They really do make the best burger going. They only do one thing and they do that well

None of those around here. I stopped going to restaurants when they banned smoking anyway.

We have been to Wendy’s may be over 100 times in last 12 years. Never had food poisoning. Their Double-Stack burgers are a bargain. The chili is average. They serve their food hot and fresh tasting.

Wendy’s problem in my opinion is they have many items very cheap, like near a dollar, and many others near $5. They would be better to have more items around 3 bucks, and not have so many dollar items. All they have to do is improve the dollar items by adding a bit more meat, may be a fresh tomato slice, a good quality cheese slice, or a strip of crisp bacon.

I’ve visited In N Out in Phoenix when on vacation, and they are excellent.

Jack in the Box, which used to be pretty good in the old days in California, has come to Indiana, and isn’t anything special anymore.

Our non franchise Mom and Pop operated eateries are doing very well .... Locals support business if its clean, well prepared food and not overpriced IMO .

Aways eat at Wendy’s when on road trips as the food is good, and consistent quality regardless of location. Albeit pricey of late...

Little by little, the cost of Wendy’s and some other fast food places has caught up with sit down places like Applebee’s, Red Robin’s, or your local independent diner. And you get much better food and bigger portions at the latter.

If you get a Wendy’s full sized salad and a coke, the cost is about $10.

IMO, sit down places have done a much better job at keeping prices low than fast food places have.

Most of the time when I go to fast food places, the food tastes like it’s been sitting around for hours. If I don’t ask for fries hot and crisp right out of the fryer, I will always get lukewarm, soggy fries. The opposite should be the norm - you should have to ask for lukewarm, soggy fries, not hot crispy ones.

The best chile I've ever had in a restaurant was at Tortilla Flat, Ariz., which is in the Superstition Mountains, about 15 miles north of Apache Junction.

When I make chile myself, I sometimes use a recipe that my mother wrote down in 1938.

How about turning some of them back into Roy Rogers! I miss Roy’s. Lord knows I bought enough holsters of fries for the long commute home. (In NJ, and I finished them before I got back to NYC, and before Bloomberg was mayor, but I’m sure he was still planning ...)

The only place I ever got food poisoning and it was not serious, was at Chick-Fil-a. I sort of held back in mentioning it as I support them.

I had a coupon for a free one and stopped by the one in Ft. Walton Bch. at the mall with my BIL. It actually tasted a bit different than I am used to so there may have been something wrong beside the usual things.

I love Chick fil-A and will keep eating there if I ever get to where they are sold.
