Netflix Plays a Sarah Palin Hashtag Game, Gets Burned
Daily Finance ^ | May 1, 2013 | Eamon Murphy

Sarah Palin's totem is the mama grizzly, and her admirers are as protective of her as the fabled bear is of her cubs.

Their target today is the resurgent Netflix (NFLX), which reported its first quarter results earlier this week. Twitchy -- conservative commentator Mchelle Malkin's Twitter monitor/controversy generator -- reports that the hashtag #SarahPalinFilms arose on Tuesday night, attributing it to "lefties" whose apparent dismissiveness towards Palin is belied by their purported obsession with her: "You know, because her 15 minutes have come and gone and she's totally not living rent-free in their heads." #Sarcasm.

Sensing an opportunity to #leverage #socialmedia to #grow their #brand, whoever was manning the Netflix Twitter account thought of a 2012 science fiction comedy film called "Iron Sky," which features a character obviously based on Palin. But the plot of this Finnish-German-Australian production would provide an occasion for the kind of theatrically outraged response that Twitchy specializes in ginning up. For "Iron Sky" concerns a group of Nazis who flee to the moon after Germany's defeat in World War II and return in 2018 via spaceships to take over the world. And the Palin-like president of the United States winds up collaborating with a couple of moon Nazis on her reelection campaign, and in general seems like a figure of ridicule....

That's the lengths they'll go to to ridicule a so-called "washed-up" "Caribou Barbie" who doesn't matter anyhow?

“You know, because her 15 minutes have come and gone and she’s totally not living rent-free in their heads.”

Who are they trying to convince, us or themselves?

They’re going to “ridicule” her right into the White House at this rate.

Sarah Palin should be elected to the senate. That way she’ll torment lefties every day the senate is in session.

Kind of like the atheists who insist God doesn’t exist but are obsessed with Him.

And want His Name stricken from the records, the public square, schools, the military, history books, etc. Not that I’d compare a mere mortal human and sinner like Sarah Palin to Our Creator, of course, and neither would she, I’m sure. But it is similar in some ways and probably some of the same people.

Iron Sky. I wish I could get that half hour of my life back - the half hour I watched it before I turned it off.

I watched that movie via Netflix a few weeks ago. It was okay, not great, but there wasn’t a ball game on.

It is a B or C movie that will soon be buried in the stacks of ‘also made’ movies.

I didn’t even remember watching it until I read the description about the Nazis on the moon.

I have been a Netflix customer for YEARS and have always liked the service. This morning I started an online chat with customer service expressing my concerns. Here is the transcript in case anyone is interested.

(transcript follows)

Thank you for contacting Netflix customer support.

Netflix Jay
Hello! My name is Jay. What can I do for you today?

You
Please let your superiors know that I look forward to a public apology from Netflix regarding the recent Sarah Palin bashing. As a conservative, I am fed up with the liberal media painting conservatives as ‘Nazis’ and such, and I WILL NOT do business with a company that chooses to pile on.

Netflix Jay
Indeed, I understand were you are coming from as a Republican myself. Netflix does not have an official position on Sarah Palin or any political views. That post is in regards to a movie we’ve aquired called Iron Sky, which is a German-Australian produced action comedy which pokes fun at politcal views and such. This again has no reflection on Netflix’s position however it’s just a post on a new movie release much like our posts on news and updates we make. We do carry Sara Palin titles on our website such as Sarah Palin: Alaska and Undefeated

Netflix Jay
I can also take any feedback you have in regards to this and forward it on for you?

You
Well I am still reading up on the details of what happened, and yes of course you offer Palin titles, but that doesn’t offset a derogatory public statement about her. Just please pass along my concern, and yes I do believe Netflix should make a public apology for this. Steps should also be taken to reel in the social media people so that it doesn’t happen again. If it continues, I am out of here, and I bet thousands of others feel the same. Thank you Jay.

Netflix Jay
Completely understand. I will get your feedback submitted as your voice is very important to us and did not mean to offend in any way. As a Republican myself I was taken back at first before finding out the details. Thanks for chatting in today, Kevin. Was there anything else I could do for you today?

You
No, thank you for your prompt reply, and for passing along my concerns. I assume you are hearing from others on this topic also.

Netflix Jay
Yes, it is a pretty big concern that Netflix is addressing. You’re very welcome, Kevin. It was a pleasure chatting with you, I understand your views and appreciate you taking the time to chat in with your feedback today.

I waited for that movie to be released for over a year ... the "highlights" looked pretty good and I thought that it had the makings of a Class-A farce movie.

What a piece of trash ... the movie sucked wet mud turtles.

I wish I could get that half hour of my life back - the half hour I watched it before I turned it off."

I hate to admit it, but I watched the whole thing. The only thought in my mind the whole time is "it's got to get better", but it didn't.

I actually destroyed the DVD; I didn't want to throw it away and run the risk of someone picking it out of the trash and having that toxic crap inflicted on them.

By the way, I just blew Comcast out of my life for their support of gun control. I made sure they knew the reason as well. So far very happy with AT&T U-verse. One thing I noticed right away is no delay when changing channels. Why the hell is Comcast so slow when you change a channel? Answer: who cares? :)

Jay in another chat with a leftie: “As a Democrat myself, I share your concerns that we have given George W. Bush aka Bushitler favorable treatment” or “As a card-carrying Communist, I understand your feelings that Michael Moore’s chillingly truthful documentaries are not given enough publicity so that he can speak truth to power.”

Strangest thing. My ROKU box allows me to end transmission and select another movie, if I don’t like the one I selected to play from Netflix.

Go figure.

It works almost like the on-off switch on the TV.

Just cancelled Netflix. Asked them if they would think it was just as funny to suggest the movie idiocracy to the hashtag #obamafilms . When are companies going to learn that politics and religion have no place in a social media strategy?
