The Man Oswald First Tried to Kill Before JFK

On February 27, General Walker boards a specially equipped tour bus owned by his close friend, the anti-communist televangelist Billy James Hargis. The two men are departing on a speaking tour to twenty-nine cities, mostly in the South: “To alert the public to the enemy within and without.” Taking their inspiration from Paul Revere, they are calling their tour Operation Midnight Ride.

Hargis is a thirty-seven-year-old, three-hundred-pound Texas-born leader of the Christian Crusade, a fervent group of a hundred thousand paid followers based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has an unusually boyish and doughy face, prefers tailored suits, and decorates his office with pictures of Jesus and a large flagpole with the Stars and Stripes. He distributes autographed pictures of himself, often signed: Go With God!

He possesses an honorary doctorate in divinity from Bob Jones University, a conservative bulwark in South Carolina, and he is armed with an abundant gift for self-promotion.

Early in his career, Hargis wrote speeches for Senator Joseph McCarthy. Then he hit upon the idea of getting Bibles into communist countries by attaching them to one million hydrogen-filled balloons that would float over the Iron Curtain. Hargis enjoys traveling in luxurious style, and he personally toured great portions of Europe in order to supervise his Bible balloon launchings into the airspace of the godless nations.

Wikipedia entry on General Walker is interesting, he attended NMMI, New Mexico Military Institute. Actually had a tiny legal problem later in life as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Walker#Later_life . I read the Warren Commission report parts on the alleged attempt on General Walker’s life by LHO.

The attempted assassination of Major General Edwin Walker story does not fit in handily with the Conspiracy Theories that like to make Lee Harvey Oswald out as a CIA operative or even being part of a conspiracy to shoot JFK for the Mafia. As historic record, I don’t believe Oswald knew how to drive so if he did this, perhaps he had an assistant.

The Mannlicher-Carcano had a faulty sight and obviously the attempt on Walker was not successful. The wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Walker indeed surmises that the Mannlicher-Carcano was probably or allegedly used in both the Walker and JFK shootings. Interesting.

Good article, a lot of that is from the Warren Commision Report.

Like I said, this episode, the shooting at Maj. General Walker’s residence throws a monkey wrench into most conspiracy theories, it just isn’t addressed at all.

I remember the attempted killing of Gen Walker. Oswald was later a suspect. Walker was very pro USA, but later got caught hustling men in a highway restroom. Whether he did or this was a setup, to discredit him, I don’t know. He had lots of political enemies.

I remember Billy James Hargis. Very anti-communist but he also fell due to homo problems. When “outed”, his university went into decline and closed.
The story was that two students, a man and woman, got married, then found that BOTH had been sexually assaulted by Hargis while at his university.

Why are you asking that? You know the answer.

No matter what though, Marina says he did it.

Marina the pariah’s immigrant widow interviewed by the Warren Commission? Gosh, no pressure there. Or Marina, the personality interviewed by Opra, claiming her husband was innocent? Gosh, case closed...
