"Obama" cannot be deleted
Self | 6 October AD 2013 | lightman

I am an unrepentent Luddite, operating Mac0S9 in a Windows world.

On Friday night I suffered the mother of all computer crashes....sent an email and just as it transmitted the background browser/email program crashed and the word processing program froze.

Usually a forced reset cures all, but not this time. Nor did a "hard reset" by spiking the power. Each time reboot attempt resulted in a flashing icon indicating an unreadable hard drive.

Hours and many dollar later the failing hard drive which had caused the freezes and crashes was replaced, and, most importantly, almost all the data was recovered and transferred.

Except for one small problem: There was a folder "rescued items from harddrive1" which absolutely refuses to be removed from the Trash.

So I tried renaming the folder.

Still refused to be deleted.

So now it is time for some fun: The folder is renamed "Obama".

And despite the government shutdown "Obama" cannot be deleted "because it is in use."

Talk about useful idiots!

No...but in one strange twist of irony shortly after posting this I had the first freeze of the “new” HD, requiring a forced restart.

And guess what...I could finally delete “Obama”.

WISH IT WERE SO EASY IN REAL LIFE!

Do we get a “restart” of 2008?

I’m surprised you can’t rename it. Try Soetoro.

"Obama" cannot be deleted "because it is in use?"

Running Apple OS X I created 0bama folder, put text files in it, opened them with text editor, launched terminal, did command line:

# sudo rm -rf /0bama/*

and whole folder and contents gone, text editor process killed.

The NSA has assuredly seen the contents of your “Obama Folder”. If you ask them very nicely, perhaps they will remove it from your computer?

And assuredly, my "Obama" folder was as empty as its namesake's cranium and character.

Just remember that if we could do that, we would end up with President McCain.

Oh. The. Horror.

We're so much better off, really.

Now seriously, is there yet anyone who says we wouldn't notice a bit of difference if we woke up one morning and found that the 2008 election had gone the other way? Or that we'd be worse off?

Granted, it still wouldn't be perfect...but then, it never will be. We let the "perfect" be the enemy of the "acceptable" far too often, and I fear we haven't learned otherwise yet.

You are on OS 9??

Um, you need to upgrade to OS X.

Here Jobs has done returned, rescued Apple, and departed for good, and you are still on OS 9? WTF‽

If he’s running on a PowerPC chip, the best he can do is a pre Snow leopard version of OSX. Don’t know if he can find one. And a lot has changed since then. Still, he would gain protected memory and preemptive multitasking.
