He's financing a Star Trek themed amusement park across the border from Israel's version of Las Vegas in Eilat. He appeared in the show while studying here in the United States and being a huge Star Trek he made a request to appear on the show on the show which was granted.
He’s just as much of a weasel as his father was, but to all sides, so, an improvement over nearly any other politician in the Arab world. Thanks lbryce.
Actually, his father was truly a remarkable person, and will be remembered by history that way.
He liberalized Jordan, protected it’s minorities ,and held it together despite any number of challenges, including world support of the radical “Palestinians”.
He understood the threat of Islamic Radicalism, long before most everyone else did, and took steps to repress it. His “solution” to the PLO problem was, how shall we say, Unique and quite effective.

He was happy to host the PLO until they tried to overthrow his ass — a weasel — then he unleashed the excellent Jordanian military against them (this was “Black September”) to the extent that some of them threw down their weapons and fled into the arms of the Israeli border guards. The PLO had the help of Syria, which started an invasion of Jordan in support, but Israel threatened to intervene (the IAF buzzed the formations) and Assad backed down.
He learned of the 1973 war plans and passed them to Israel — weasel — but alas, the Labor-led gov’t did nothing about it.
When Saddam was firing Scuds through Jordanian airspace, the weasel held a press conference and denied any knowledge of any such violations of Jordan’s sovereignty. Saddam rolled tanks into eastern Jordan during the years between the Gulf War and the invasion of Iraq, and the king said nothing. Saddam pulled them out, but it was clearly meant as a threat.
He gave clemency to MBs and other jihadists who were under death sentence after their trials, very merciful, very liberalized.
He finally entered into a peace treaty with Israel in 1994 — again, weasel. I’m not against the treaty, I’m saying just what I said initially, he was a weasel.
For the last surviving British-mandated regime in the Middle East (I don’t count the Saudis, they turned on the UK after the Turks were driven out, in fact, they drove King Hussein’s family out of their old capital, Mecca; the Hashemites claim descent from Big Mo himself), in a landlocked country, he managed to not get assassinated or overthrown, but also ethnically cleansed the “west bank” and “east Jerusalem”.
In each case of “weasel” that you cite, he seems to be acting in Jordan’s best interests.
It wasn’t in Jordan’s best interest to fight yet another war with Israel, at a time when he was widening connections with the west. (To counter Soviet involvement in Syria).
During GW1, again he acts in Jordan’s best interests, staying out a war he wants nothing to do with, and maintaining neutrality, while not knowing the resolve of the U.S. intentions. (He was cooperating with U.S. intelligence, while trying to keep Iraqi tanks out of Jordan. Remember the situation after Kuwait was invaded.)
The clemency acts can be debated, but they did keep unrest at a minimum.
And finally, the peace treaty with Israel was a HUGE step forward toward peace in the Middle East.
The U.S.-educated son faces many of the same issues, and having a White House full of hating MB’s isn’t helping much, I’m sure.
He was nimble, good at holding on to power, but he was still a weasel. He isn’t trusted by anyone, because he could have acted in a variety of different ways and his supporters would still say, he acted in Jordan’s best interests.
He supported the old “west bank” civil service structure for years after the 1967 expulsion of his army, which clearly was an odd thing to do — then in the 1980s just dropped them flat — again, the weasel. I remember how this move of his was looked on as great statesmanship, that it would shake loose a peace agreement. All that happened was, he saved a couple of bucks and the terrorist orgs moved in to fill that role.
He had a reliable tribal core of support, the Hashemites, who always backed him. They now make up about 30-35 percent of the population, and the “Palestinian” Arabs who make up much of the rest didn’t seem to bite when “Arab Spring” tried to come to Jordan. For that matter, they didn’t exactly stream out of their houses when Arafat tried to take over.
The curious part of Zero’s Mideast apparent train wreck foreign policy is a sort of shrug when it comes to Jordan. The current king isn’t a patch to his father — no doubt he was able, but he was still a weasel — but lucky for him he’s ruling a population which likes things pretty much the way they are and seem to want no part of the chaos that goes on under PLO/Hamas rule, or Iranian occupation a la Lebanon, or civil war as in Syria and Iraq.
I don’t disagree. Was said more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. I am sure the considerable presence of fundamentalist Muslims in Jordan probably consider the King’s appearance on the show an abomination to Islam.

Three were uprooted, Muammar Gaddafi, Hosni Mubarak and Saddam Hussein and uprooted is the perfect word as these three had nearly 100 years of combined rule in the M.E. No small feat.

... One theory, possibly the best known but also the most criticized, comes from the reports of Marco Polo during his travels to the Orient. He recounts a story he heard, of the "Old Man of the Mountain" (Sabbah) who would drug his young followers with hashish, lead them to a "paradise", and then claim that only he had the means to allow for their return. Perceiving that Sabbah was either a prophet or magician, his disciples, believing that only he could return them to "paradise", were fully committed to his cause and willing to carry out his every request.[6] However, this story is disputed due to the fact that Sabbah died in 1124 and Sinan, who is frequently known as the "Old Man of the Mountain", died in 1192, whereas Marco Polo was not born until 1254.
With his new weapons, Sabbah began to order assassinations, ranging from politicians to great generals. Assassins would rarely attack ordinary citizens though, and tended not to be hostile towards them. All Hashashins were trained in both the art of combat and in the study of religion, believing that they were on a jihad and were religious warriors. Some[who?] consider them the Templars of Islam and, as such, also forming an order with varying degrees of initiation...
Military tactics
In pursuit of their religious and political goals, the Ismailis adopted various military strategies popular in the Middle Ages. One such method was that of assassination, the selective elimination of prominent rival figures. The murders of political adversaries were usually carried out in public spaces, creating resounding intimidation for other possible enemies.[Daftary 7] Throughout history, many groups have resorted to assassination as a means of achieving political ends. In the Ismaili context, these assignments were performed by fida'is (devotees) of the Ismaili mission. They were unique in that civilians were never targeted. The assassinations were against those whose elimination would most greatly reduce aggression against the Ismailis and, in particular, against those who had perpetrated massacres against the community. A single assassination was usually employed in favour of widespread bloodshed resulting from factional combat. Hashashin are also made to be adept in furusiyya, or the Islamic warrior code, where they are trained in combat, disguises, and equestrianism. Codes of conducts are followed, and the hashashin are taught in the art of war, linguistics, and strategies. Hashashins never allowed their women to be at their fortresses during military campaigns, both for protection and secrecy. This is a tradition first made by Hassan when he sent his wife and daughters to Girdkuh when a famine was created during the Seljuk siege of Alamut.

Assassinations were primarily carried out with a dagger, which was sometimes tipped with poison. Due to being immensely outnumbered in enemy territory, the hashashin tended to specialize in covert operations.
