DETROIT — Marygrove College, a private Catholic school, has established an interfaith prayer room, which will serve as a space for prayer for Muslim students. Marygrove's president and staff, along with students and representatives from the Muslim community, celebrated on Wednesday Jan. 15, the grand opening of the room, reflecting the college's diversity.

President of Marygrove College Dr. David Fike said the celebration of the interfaith prayer room is "symbolic" of our coming together as diverse communities and individuals in the journey of life.

Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America stressed the common spiritual goal of all religions.

"All roads lead to god," he said. "We worship him in different languages, and he's the one who understands all languages. By celebrating the grand opening of this chapel, we are celebrating our commonalities. And I'm sure our commonalities outnumber our differences."

Continued...Alia Zeidan, a Marygrove graduate, started attending the college in 2008. She said it was hard for her to drive 30 minutes to Dearborn to pray when she had morning and afternoon classes.

Zeidan proposed the idea of the prayer room in 2011 at a business class."We have chapels in the school. I thought to myself why can't Muslim students have a place to pray," she said. "I talked to [director of campus ministry] brother Jesse Cox about the issue, especially that the number of Muslims on campus was growing because of the soccer scholarships and the international studies program."

Zeidan said she did not actively push the project, as she was busy with her academic life. But at the same, the school was following through with the proposal.

Janice Machusak, Marygrove's director of mission integration, voiced Zeidan's demands to the school's leadership. The college consulted community organizations in Dearborn to pick an appropriate room.

In the Fall semester of 2013, which was Zeidan's last, the room became available to students. Zeidan said she raised about $600 for rugs, prayer dresses and Qurans for the room.

"I was very excited. I wanted to see it happen before I left," she said. "This room makes us feel equal. They have a place to pray; we have a place to pray. We believe in the unity of all religions. This school is like a family. You never feel alienated because of your faith."

Zeidan said she could not obtain the exact number of Muslim students at the school while proposing the project because it is optional to declare faith on the college application. But according to her estimates, about 100 Muslims attend Marygrove.

Zeidan thanked the school for its efforts to accommodate Muslim students and singled out Machusak in her gratitude.

Noor Hussein, who moved recently to the U.S. and is pursuing a degree in social studies at Marygrove, said she did not expect to see a Muslim prayer room in an American Catholic college.

"It's a beautiful thing," she said.

Marygrove is sponsored by The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.), a Catholic religious institute based in Monroe, Michigan. The school was established in Detroit as a 2-year college in 1905. Today 984 undergraduate and 1,713 postgraduate students attend the school.

Machusak thanked the students "who started this conversations."

"Students have been the driving force behind everything we do," she said. Janice Machusak, Marygrove's director of mission integration, voiced Zeidan's demands to the school's leadership...The church is bowing before the beast that is rising. Many so called “believers,” perpetuate the lie that Islam is a religion of peace, and that it is only a tiny fraction of radicles who are giving Islam a bad name.

Not quite what I was thinking.

I think it reflects the Infidel lack of knowledge of what Islam is all about. -tom

There is NO getting along with Islam, if Marygrove College doesn’t do it just right, the muslims will burn it down or sue you into oblivion.

I have no sympathy . . . you enroll non-Catholics who are extremely anti-Christians in all phases of their faith and what do you expect? Shame on the college. We will be crushed from within . . . no from without.

I appreciate the post. My Democrat mama went to Marygrove. Can’t wait to see what she has to say.

Fools.

But then, the IHM were among the first religious orders to go publicly bonkers (back in the 70s or maybe late 60s in LA). I’m surprised there’s any of them left, actually.

Do they have a Christian chapel? A Jewish place of worship?

I attended Christ the King school in Deetroit for grades 7 and 8. It was staffed by IHM nuns.

Sister Mary Esmeralda was about 4’10” and a holy terror with her metal edged 18” ruler. I saw her draw blood on a couple of occasions in her service of Christ.

My, how things have changed.

What an idiot! They HATE you! They ask their ‘god’ to give them strength to kill you and Jews and Christians!

Yeah, God understands all languages, and He knows what they are saying. You should find out what they are saying - you’ll be shocked.

Uh, that was the 'Imam' speaking...(though he was obviously lying)...not the pseudo-Christian nincompoop.

Zeidan proposed the idea (...) Zeidan said she did not actively push the project (...) Janice Machusak, Marygrove's director of mission integration, voiced Zeidan's demands...

See how it works? Proposal...--->...denial...--->...demand! So simple, so obvious, and yet the liberal fools fall for it so easily time and again.

This is really mindboggling.
We are ‘broke’ (or so they say) BUT manage to eke out enough money for the minutia.

Even at my age I was NEVER a hater of anyone because of their race, ethnicity, religion etc. (I am sort of lying up because I have NEVER had any use for die hard Liberals).

I believed in the MLK theory of judging a man/woman by their character not color of skin.

That said, I had always gone under the assumption that if I walked into a neighborhood bar or restaurant and it was basically filled with __________ and I didn’t feel comfortable, my first thought was to gracefully leave and if someone were to mention the place in the future, would just relay my experience and leave it a that.

To petition courts, police, local newspapers etc just seemed foolish as I felt if I were someplace I wasn’t wanted, no sense staying there and helping to pay the owners rent.

I am not only talking ‘Black’ bars/neighborhoods, I, being a straight white male would more than likely get the same ‘non-welcome’ or being ‘shunned’ were I to wander into a Jewish, Italian, Motorcycle, Gay and even being of Irish descent, would still be the “Stranger or BNG/BNFG” in an Irish bar or neighborhood.
Granted a lot of the trepidation may be on my part because I maybe wasn’t ‘comfortable’ in the area etc..
We used to call them ‘neighborhoods’ and they worked fairly well into the 60’s when LBJ had a plan to do away with Ethnic settings.
By that time the ‘wanderlust’ had set in and a lot of people OF ALL SORTS began leaving the cities because of one problem or another and began settling the ‘wide open spaces’ of the suburbs.
I had an aunt and uncle (WASPS in today speak) living in the Bronx and I was sort of farmed out to them and I remember the mumblings of the neighborhood ‘changing’ and “we have to move, the Jews” are taking over.
A Bunker hit on that theme in his Queens neighborhood.
Cities were mostly made up of Ethnic Neighborhoods.

Anyway, if I were to chose -for whatever reason- to go to Brandeis, the last thing in the world I would be allowed or able to do is ‘complain’ Brandeis didn’t have a Catholic Chapel and or a couple of Priests or Nuns on the payroll.

Just like you living (rent free) in your fathers basement at 35, if he tells you to be home by 11 so you don’t disturb HIM because he is in bed by midnight, you either follow his rules or find another place to live- the same applies to Colleges/Universities IF you accept Government money, expect to have to follow Govt ‘rules’ or guidelines.
The major difference being your father is spending HIS money to maintain you while the Govt is spending OUR money to subsidize the Institutes of learning.

So for a Muslim, Baptist, Jew etc to VOLUNTARILY go to Notre Dame, Georgetown and DEMAND a Mosque, Synagogue or Goat sacrifice or snake handling is absolutely ludicrous.

Yes. Invite the vampire into your house. After it sucks your blood out and beheads you, your family can think about the commonalities and the religion of peace.

What fools.

I’d like to ask the imam how many Christian and Jewish prayer rooms are in the Islamic Center of America?

If I guess ‘zero’ would I be right?

Their smug self-righteousness is palpable even from here in California.

I lived my first 21 years within 1/2 mile from the Marygrove Campus. Never did get into the Campus or anything else. Best I can remember it was a beautiful - wooded Campus behind a 6 foot fence.
