I don't know if Penn Jillette actually said this, but it's very well said and echoes conversations I've had with others on the topic that drew the very same conclusion.
To me coerced giving through confiscatory means isn't just immoral, it actually degrades society because real compassion begins to atrophy..."why should I care about my neighbor when the government pays a nameless, faceless bureaucrat to do it for me."
Penn is one of the few atheists that I have respect for.
It is a very short list indeed
While Penn is a libertarian atheist, he’s not stupid by any means. This sounds like something he’d say.
Probably not far from what Ayn Rand would say, either.
You help People who CAN’T help themselves, not People who WON’T help themselves, PERIOD.
I say let the liberal/prongs claim to be compassionate. Compassion is, today, a false virtue. The compassionate person sees suffering and says “how awful someone (else) must do something”. We Catholics do not practice the corporal works of compassion. There is no place in heaven or posterity for the person whose sole act was to vote to do good with someone else’s wealth.
He may be an atheist, but he does have respect for some who have religion. He was very touched by one gentleman who spoke with him about religion, and then gave him a Bible. Penn said that for someone to care enough about your soul to give you such a gift is very meaningful.
Though, it didn’t sway him from atheism, at least he knows that not all Christians are like the the Westboro nuts.
So, I have some respect for him as well.
at least he knows that not all Christians are like the the Westboro nuts.
A very offensive statement
Very well put.
Spot on! so true.
That was kind of my point, I guess failed miserably to convey it. That IS how the media tries to portray us. When they think of Christians, it’s the Westboros that they prance out there to smear us.
It’s not charity if it’s not your money.
