By Chuck Morse author of Was Hitler a Leftist?
The Chabad Lubavitch Hassidic movement has requested that Yad Vashem recognize Nazi Admiral Wilhelm Canaris as a Righteous Gentile. Chief of the Abwehr, the Nazi intelligence service, Canaris played a key role in saving the lives of the Chabad Rebbe Yitzhak Yosef Schneerson and his family along with an estimated 500 Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943 according to numerous testimonies. Canaris has also been credited with using his position to convince Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco to stay out of the war and to stop a kidnapping and murder plot ordered by Hitler against Pope Pius XII and Italian King Victor Emanuel II after the 1943 Nazi occupation of Rome.
Chuck Morse, radio talk show host and author of the recently released book Was Hitler a Leftist? and of the previously released book The Nazi Connection to Islamic Terrorism published by WND Books contends that the refusal of Yad Vashem and the Holocaust Studies establishment to recognize Wilhelm Canaris as a Righteous Gentile is due to their concern that such recognition might open a can of worms on the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration and its conduct during World War II.
Admiral Canaris met with American Ambassador to Turkey George H. Earle in Istanbul, 1942. Speaking on behalf of an impressive array of high ranking German military and civilian officials he offered to have Hitler surrounded in his bunker, arrested, and sent to the west for trial as a war criminal. He stated that an armistice with a German provisional government would include the complete withdrawal of Germany from occupied Europe and a holding of a line against Soviet aggression by Germany on the eastern front with the help of the allies.
At the time Allan Dulles, who was the OSS chief in Switzerland, was reporting to FDR on the activities of these same anti-Nazi Germans who were looking for allied support. Dulles noted, in his book Germanys Underground published in 1947, that the Allies supported every anti-Nazi group in occupied Europe during the war except for the German anti-Nazis. Earle, Dulles and others were ignored by the Roosevelt Administration. In his book, Dulles names the anti-Nazi conspirators and they included such prominent German figures as General Ludwig Beck, Carl Frederick Gerderler, Ulrich von Hassell, Johannes Popitz, General Kurt von Hammerstein and General Erwin von Witzleben. Indeed, in March 1947, the New York Times broke the story with the headline: Full Story of anti-Hitler plot shows that Allies refused to Assist. Why then did FDR refuse to help these anti-Nazi Germans end the war as they were reaching out as early as 1943?
Incontrovertible evidence now exists that includes congressional testamony from several reliable witnesses, the recently de-classified Verona decryptions which were secret communications between the Soviets and their American agents during the war and the opening of Soviet Archives after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that FDR was virtually surrounded by pro-Soviet spies, dupes, operatives and agents of influence. These included his virtual co-president Harry Hopkins, Assistant Secretary of State Alger Hiss, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Harry Dexter White, White House economic advisor Laughlin Currie, foreign policy advisor Laurence Duggan, Virginias Frank Coe and many others marbled throughout virtually every department of the Roosevelt Administration including the OSS and the Office of War Information. Harry Hopkins and Laughlin Curry lived in the White House just down the hall from FDR. Meanwhile his wife Eleanor wrote published paeans to Uncle Joe Stalin.
Archival evidence indicates that the Soviets wanted the war to continue long enough for them to conquer Eastern Europe and in order for Germany to be utterly destroyed or pastoralized which was called for in the Morgenthau Plan which was actually written by Soviet spy Harry Dexter White. The Soviets were also clamoring for a second front in France in order to deflect the allies out of Italy and the Balkans which was too close to Russia.
Yad Vashem, in their justification for refusing to recognize Wilhelm Canaris as a Righteous Gentile, claimed that Canaris was too involved in the Nazi war effort at too high a level yet had Canaris been successful in his effort to end the war in 1943 hundreds of thousands of Allied lives would have been saved, the Holocaust would have been stopped thus saving possibly millions of Jews, the extermination of the Hungarian Jews would not have happened, and the Soviets would have been stopped dead in their tracks thus saving millions more from the scourge of decades of Communism. Now is the time to recognize the valiant and courageous actions of the Righteous Gentile Wilhelm Canaris, who was tortured and executed a week before the collapse of the Nazi regime. Now is also the time for a forthright rendering of the history of World War II.
I always thought there was a lot of communists in the government. There still is. We have one in the White House now. Not much has changed.

One?
testamony? Verona transcripts? careless, stupid errors like this distract from the author’s message...
The Ostheer Generals would never commit to an overthrow of Hitler because of the potential accusations of a "stab in the back" by officers associated with the Army in France. If you were in the Wehrmacht Resistance, you needed Ostfront Officers who were respected by the front soldiers like Manstein and Guderian to form the core of a new Government.
Yes, say what you will about Harry Hopkins and Dexter White, all either Soviet Fellow Travelers or, in White's case, and outright spy like Hiss, FDR had sound reasons for staying out of coup plotting. After the conduct of the SS, the SD, the Einsatzkommandos and the Wehrmacht itself in the East against Russian civilians, the notion of dumping Stalin without earning 100 years of Russian enmity was too much of a price for FDR to pay.
In the long run, FDR did the right thing. Yes, he was surrounded by Communists, but that doesn't alter the fact that in failing to support a largely amateurish and bungling gaggle of Junkers coup plotters, he did the right thing, perhaps for the wrong reasons.
That said, Canaris deserves the honor coming to him from the State of Israel.
The memoirs of the highest-ranking German resistance survivor, Fabian von Schlabrendorff, back this up. For example, Canaris was sent to Spain to call in Germany’s favor and join the Axis; instead, he warned Franco to stay neutral. Imagine trying to invade North Africa with Gibraltar in Nazi hands.
Well, ok, the whole group of them in and out of the administration, are a bunch of communists or Islamo fascists.
There were, as well, the frightening consequences of failure that did, in fact, take place. The Nazis tortured people to death - Hofacker - or hanged them with piano wire - Stauffenberg's brother - or simply executed their relatives. Physicist Max Planck's son was killed for his involvement. Involvement meant risking one's own life and those of one's family. That's how police states maintain themselves.
And so the most necessary part - what would constitute a post-Hitler government - was something that was incredibly risky to plan and, in fact, wasn't thought through with sufficient thoroughness. That I can forgive them. They tried to slay the monster and failed. But they did try.
Admiral Canaris and his organization play a big part in W.E.B. Griffin's Honor Series (7 books so far).
Which one? There are dozens I could name off the top of my head, and no, I don’t mean Van Jones, who didn’t last long, anyhow.
See my post number 8.
I don't know where in the world you get your information from.
Rommel was the epitomy of a soldier of honor. He believed that no matter what his duty was in service to Hitler without qualification and wherever Hitler would lead the German people, the military forces under his command, Rommel felt it was his absolute duty to demonstrate obedience to the man he personally swore an oath of subservience to, to never waver from that oath of loyalty, under any circumstances.
The conspirators against Hitler specifically asked Rommel to be part of the effort to which Rommel absolutely refused based on his oath of loyalty but agreed to be part of any effort on behalf of Germany if they succeeded in killing Hitler.
It happens that in the aftermath of the bombing on July 20,1944, one of the conspirators was knocked unconcious, remaining in a coma, during which, unknowingly, kept on repeating Rommel's name.
Rommel had emphatically kept his word to Hitler in unswerving loyalty, but fate dealt Rommel a much undeserved, horribly unfortunate hand. Without the mention of his name spoken out in delirious, disjointed manner, Rommel would have survived the war and his record as a soldier would have kept him untouched by the Nazi scourge.
Unfortunately, the Nazis did not need very much to execute someone whom they perceived as an enemy.
Nevertheless, Rommel still retained enough goodwill to be given the choice of committing suicide, declared killed in battle and given a hero's funeral by Reich attended by all including Hitler or standing trial for treason. He was handed a gun and told to shoot himself in the head and within ten minutes the deed was done.
While Colonel Stauffenberg was the major impetus behind the plot, in the aftermath of the failure he was apprehended and shot on sight, his children taken away from his family, while living with their grandparents and separated, given to Polish families. After the war, his children were located and reunited.
Not so fortunate were the those plotters who survived the attempt. They were jailed, put on trial, horribly tortured, executed by having been hanged by piano wire to extend their agony, and filmed in their death throes for Hitler's private screening, gloating. One conspirator had his testicles ripped off. While Canaris was executed by hanging, he was not allowed to die with dignity as he was hanged naked, without any clothes.
From about a month's worth of forced study in December. But Rommel's knowledge and approval of the plot was perfectly well known and has been for years. I don't know where you get your information from either, but one note in the Wiki article on Ludwig Beck reads:
In May 1944, a memorandum by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel made it clear that his participation in the proposed putsch was based on the precondition that Beck serve as the head of state in the new government.
Further, Rommel wasn't even particularly coy about it to his staff in the days prior to the July 20 plot. I'll happily provide other sources that verify this if you like - they're about 100 miles from where I'm sitting at the moment but won't be difficult to dig up since they're sitting on my coffee table at the moment.
He never really spent much time in Berlin once the war began. Either being in Africa, Paris, near the fortifications on the English Channel. Since he was hardly in or around the presence of Hitler most of the time during the War, there would be very little to gain by having him involved or being aware of the conspiracy.
bump for later
The Nazis knew that had Rommel been shoved in front of the tribunals, even the fanatics in the rabble would have had second thoughts. He was too popular and too clean for their show trials.
The key to the whole mess was killing Hitler. With him dead, there was nobody from the Nazi hierarchy that commanded the obedience that Hitler could. It would have been messy, but someone with the stature of Rommel could have taken over in that vacuum.
If von Stauffenberg had stayed with his bomb, everything would have come out better.
The problem was, as he had no real safe place to activate the bombs he had to do it in the men's room. Again, the problem was, it was a small facility only enough for one person. And so while he was trying to activate the bombs, other officers were pounding on the door who needed to use the bathroom as well. But Stauffenberg's dexterity with his hand was severely limited due to an injury earlier in the war leaving him with only two fingers on one hand and as a result could only activate one bomb as not to arouse suspicion had he taken longer to have both bombs activated.
And this is why Hitler survived. Because Staffenberg didn't have enough time to arm both bombs.
