Local Officials Shut Down 11 Year Old's Cupcake Business as a Threat to Public Health
Yahoo Voices ^ | January 30, 2014 | Mark R. Whittington

11 year old Chloe Stirling got some great accolades from her local newspaper for the cupcake business she had started out of her parents' kitchen. Unfortunately the local health department took another view and shut her down.

The sticking point was that not only did she lack the proper permits and licenses to run a food business, but according to local and state law she would have to either own her own bakery or have a kitchen separate from that of her parents to continue cooking cupcakes for money. Since this was clearly impossible, Stirling is no longer able to run a business. Thus she has learned at an early age that the biggest obstacle to entrepreneurism consists of government rules and regulations.

I don't need the Health Department to tell me what to buy or not buy. *I* probably wouldn't eat cupcakes made by random kids because they probably sneezed all over it. BUT, I might BUY cupcakes from random kids trying to make a dollar by being enterprising.

This is what the government's prob is, anyway....can't have young people think they can pull themselves by their bootstraps and make a go of it on their own. Geez! What kind of adult would that be? They wouldn't understand how the government should be in control of everything!

so....nope. Don't need the government to step in. This little cupcake business will run its own course.

...not only did she lack the proper permits and licenses...

This is the real reason she was shut down. They weren't getting their cut. Permits and licenses do nothing to ensure food quality. If they did, we'd never have a problem with a meal in a restaurant, meanwhile home cooked meals would be sending us to the hospital once a month. There is no correlation here, only $.

So when you pass a lemonade stand and a few kids who look no older than about 10 or 11 are behind their rickety counter, you call the local health authorities to get their stand shut down? Can’t have little kids with their dirty fingers trying to sell lemonade or Kool-Aid at ten cents a cup when you could get a vile disease can we?

We built a great nation without the regulations. With them we can’t even hold on to one.

“And you’re assured in the privacy of restaurant kitchens across America the same thing doesn’t happen, at some level?”

Of course it does. Everybody knows that. But if I get sick I can sue the crap out of them.

I nearly died after eating bad scallops at the most expensive upscale restaurant in town. Others were afflicted from the same dinner that night, so the cases were settled immediately.

Don’t try to make me out to be the mean old troll that lives under the bridge and hates little kids because I’d rather eat food prepared in a commercially inspected kitchen. A kitchen that does not get their water from a well drilled 50’ from their septic tank, a kitchen that doesn’t have cats walking on the countertops, a kitchen sink that didn’t have mommy washing little Timmy’s puke off his bib an hour before this little girl did the dishes.

Expend all the spare time you want, but you know I’m right. It’s not about big government shutting down some poor little girl from making a few bucks. It’s about keeping people (little kids included) from getting sick.

I usually fire a couple of warning shots over their heads and when they run away in a panic I then pull out my flame-thrower and burn the stand to the ground. After I’ve killed their puppies and strangled their kittens, I generally torch the entire neighborhood.

Grow up and think before you post such nonsense.

Obviously Chloe Stirling foolishly believe Traitorobama when he told her, “If you like your cupcake business, you can keep your cupcake business.”

Chloe should be thankful the Gestapo didn’t shoot her dog, murder her mother while she was standing on the porch, burn her house down while trying to break down the door, and place Chloe in a foster home, claiming she had unfit parents.

So don’t buy her f-ing cupcakes!!!!

Why destroy a child who is having fun??!! I may not drink the lemonade I purchased from their stand, but I will sure buy it and make sure I pay extra for their enthusiasm and to encourage them to dream.

Good Lord. When did you just give up on life?

“You are also FREE TO CHOOSE not to buy. WHY shut it down?”

You’re right. It is my choice not to eat them. I never said to shut her down. If her kitchen passes a health department inspection for cleanliness then I’m in her corner all the way.

I’m sure that while they were busy raiding the 11 year old’s immaculate cupcake kitchen, a half dozen illegal alien tamale wagons cruised by on the sidewalk unmolested by the health department nazis.

The Health Department did the right thing. Have you ever watched where a kid puts their fingers/hands?

I take it you never eat at fast food joints or restaurants.

The signs on the restrooms walls say "lave Los manos", but they never do.

I bet you don't either.

There are probably only a handful of FReepers here that are more anti-Big Government than I am.

You state that you probably wouldn’t buy a cupcake from random kids that sneezed on them. But you would buy the same cupcake to help them “make a dollar by being enterprising.”

We do the same thing at yard sales. How can you pass up some cute little girl or boy selling cookies? They get fed to our dog when we get home. I’m sure that now I’ll get attacked by dog-lovers for not caring about our pet’s health.

Anyway, thank you for the mature response to my suggestion that there does need to be reasonable health rules & regulations when selling food to the public.

I wonder if the people that chastised me for my thoughts would cringe if their doctor used the same gloves that they used on the patient before them? Or a used syringe? Or the doctor pulled out a big bugger from his nose, wiped it on his pants and then wanted to look in their throat?

Your words on this thread belie your claim.

I do that all the time. Stop over-reacting and read my post #32.

Aren’t you late for school?

Did you read the article? Her kitchen wasn't shut down because the Health Department found unsanitary conditions, she was shut down because "lack the proper permits and licenses to run a food business, but according to local and state law she would have to either own her own bakery or have a kitchen separate from that of her parents "

She was shut down because of onerous and unnecessary big government regulations designed to prevent upstart young people from competing with big corporations who get regulations passed for the sole purpose of hindering competition.

In 1776 every 11 year old girl in America had at least 6 years of experience in making commercial baked goods. Nobody shut down the house kitchen because they didn't have the necessary permits.

You are so used to being compliant with unnecessary and onerous regulations that are designed to keep people down that you don't recognize it when the government overreaches and shuts down some little girl's dream. Instead your cheer on the food nazis.

I gotta be going so I won't be late for court.

I'm sorry, but that's just absolute bullshit. When you buy stuff from kids at a stand like this, you know exactly what you're getting. If you want to sue them for making you ill, then you're a part of what's wrong with this country.

The nanny state exists for their own sake, not yours or mine.
