I’ve been getting emails recently, asking about the situation in Ukraine and what could be done to prepare for it for those that live there. The steps to take are in many ways the same ones you would take so as to prepare for a large scale economic crisis or long term sociopolitical conflict.
For those of you in Ukraine or Russia, feel free to share your thoughts through email or on the comments below.

Look what happens every Black Friday and that’s just Christmas shopping, look what happened recently during the winter storms in the south and the northeast. Look at what is happening in the Ukraine, Venezuela, Syria, Greece, Argentina, Thailand and so on....The world is dry tinder just awaiting the right spark.

Selco covers this in this article many times people just can not except that a breakdown is occurring even as they watch it happening before their eyes. Why don’t they realize it? It’s caused by a condition called ‘Normalcy Bias’ a mental state people enter when facing a disaster.
It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation.

You either prepare and stand on your own beholden to no one or you become dependent on others to provide your basic needs and become their ‘serf’. Me I don’t want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly don’t want to have to kiss some ‘gubberment’ third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I don’t want some ‘jack booted’ thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I don’t want to be shut up in with a bunch of ‘zombies’ and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, cash (I myself have been putting up change for the past few years both for the metal content and the fact that using change places to make what purchases you can will move you down the the list of possible marks during shtf), tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.
As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

We’re going to walled in cities. North of Houston Exxon is building a city where 5,000 people will work. More and more gated communities are being built. Before too long there will need to be armed guards to protect the neighborhoods. I just don’t see how one person will be able to protect himself.
I think cannibalism is a perfectly reasonable response to starvation or hard times. That is why I always endeavor to fatten up my neighbors as part of my preparedness policy.
Thank you for posting all the useful links. I’ve already sent a few to friends in Ukraine. I’ve even sent them to a couple in Russia that are fearful.

That Exxon venture is just outside Montgomery County where it meets up with Harris County. I don’t think it is within Montgomery County, just a few miles outside it. I live in Montgomery County and the Exxon venture is about 12-14 miles from me. This area is a swell place to live and Exxon figured that out. That particular area will send people to my town to buy goods because we are not crowded with cars everywhere. I guess their cars are going to be added but it would be awhile before it could get crowded.

I also live in a gated townhouse group where we own our townhouses. When I come though our gates, it’s like the town just left - I can’t see or hear any of it but town is just yards from our gate. Our property owners’ assn. just put in a surveillance camera pointed toward our gate. Good for us.
We considered selling our home and building a house in Montgomery. One of the lots we looked at was $36,000. And I wouldn’t call it “upscale”. So, we’re staying where we are.
Exxon is causing home prices to skyrocket in The Woodlands. Homes that wouldn’t sell a year ago for $250,000 are now selling like hotcakes for $300,000.
To me it’s strange. You drive down I45 and look over at the construction and it’s like an Emerald City. Entire freeway ramps are being built just for Exxon.
On Hwy 249 south of Tomball is Noble Energy. They bought the Hewlet Packard campus and are building more buildings. That area is booming.

Yes, both The Woodlands and Montgomery are in Montgomery County. I knew a fellow who was getting a home he had for a rental, ready for sale in Magnolia which is in that area. He thought that house would sell faster now due to the Exxon venture. I suspect homes in Conroe will rise in price since we are so near there.
