A court in Egypt has sentenced to death 528 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
They were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property.
The group is among some 1,200 Muslim Brotherhood supporters on trial, including senior members.
Authorities have cracked down harshly on Islamists since Mr Morsi was removed by the military in July. Hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested.

It’s a shame the same treatment isn’t given to other supporters of Islamists who usurp their country’s constitution.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Israel and Egypt form an alliance and take on Iran.Of course we all know which side Obama would be on.
This sort of “court proceeding” underscores the fact that the values, practices and institutions of the Western Enlightenment are not accommodated in Muslim cultures. When Western leaders stop deluding themselves with the fantasy that they are “just like us”, policies will become more effective and logical.

Wonder, though, whether this mass sentencing will begin and/or escalate civil war. Egypt could like like Syria very soon. A shame, as so much of the world’s culture will be destroyed. Also dangerous to have so many millions of people displaced, murdered, wounded. I cannot see an upside for us if this happens.
Was Obama one of them?
There will be chronic civil war in Egypt. The Western oriented secularists are in chronic conflict with the political Islamists. Egypt has over 85 million people. Most are impoverished, rural and poorly educated. Their grinding poverty makes them very susceptible to the allure of the political Islamists. Sadly there will be no shortage of young bizarre people willing to wear suicide vests. Egypt may not be governable without chronic harsh suppression. Such an environment will destroy tourism and dissuade any foreign investment. If the Arab donors tire of their subsidies, the cost of food and essentials will skyrocket.
Your description of Egypt’s future is certainly succinct and probably correct, unfortunately. I always wanted to visit; now I can kiss the Sphinx goodbye.
Remembering back to Obama’s Cairo speech; the people now sentenced to death for random murders were financed with US taxpayer dollars. How much we gave the Muslim Brotherhood, I don’t remember. Right now I’m wondering how Obama will try to intervene and have these sentences commuted.
