TOKYO President Obama encountered setbacks to two of his most cherished foreign-policy projects on Thursday, as he failed to achieve a trade deal that undergirds his strategic pivot to Asia and the Middle East peace process suffered a potentially irreparable breakdown.

"Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was not able to overcome entrenched resistance from Japans farmers".
How about Japan's consumers? How about Japans Prime Minister? Do they have any misgivings about becoming 'entrenched' in American food supply?
How about this doozy:
"Other analysts faulted Mr. Obama, saying his decision not to fight for the legislative authority at home to pass major trade deals ..."
So Obama's only fault is he didn't fight hard to force Congress to forego one of it's enumerated duties?
Is this the harshest criticism the New York Times can come up with? No mention of his intransigence with the House?
He's burned his bridges and he's stuck on that little island of his presidency.
In fact, Obama is brilliantly administrating America's decline.
Why attribute something to malice when just plain stupid will do.
