While Americans typically laud our national "exceptionalism" -- a sense that the trajectory of history has bestowed greatness upon the United States -- there are a few of our distinctive characteristics that don't deserve celebration. On the subject of firearms, for example, the United States is exceptionally irrational. No other nation has set guns aside as an object of worship.
We have let a blood-soaked gun lobby dictate our laws and regulations on firearms; we have passed "stand your ground" laws that allow violent and angry men to murder unarmed people; we have given the mentally unstable the ability to buy military-style assault weapons with which they wreak havoc on crowds. Last week, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a bill into law that would allow denizens of his state to carry firearms into government buildings, bars and, God help us, churches.
In addition, we have allowed the gun lobby to suppress research into the public health consequences of our firearms-worshipping culture. Indeed, U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga. -- running in a crowded GOP primary for a U.S. Senate seat -- has recently reversed himself, going back on an earlier pledge to support such studies. It hardly gets any loonier than that.

Let the love-fest begin!!!
Good grief, where is the BARF Alert?
Cynthia, lay back and enjoy it!
And yet, we’re all somehow much smarter than Cynthia Tucker.
What in the world does this mean?
Let’s see. The queen of dumb is lecturing us about being dumb?
Seems somehow fitting.
Cynthia Tucker is a leftard racist loon.
It means the title should be changed to “cynthia tucker is exceptionally dumb”
Correction: America has been dumbed down to guns (and their history and usefulness against tyrants)
I would have to tell Miss Cynthia — when there is a raccoon in my chicken house slitting the throats of pullets just for kicks, I am going for my shotgun.
A gun is a tool just like a hammer or tire iron. (This from a nearly pacifist almost Quaker/Mennonite mom)
Hyperbole, anyone?
This nut obviously doesn't understand history and the people's fear of tyrannical government, which was the rule up to the American Revolution. Of course, if you're a part of that tyrannical government and not subject to its overbearing laws, you have nothing to fear, and this nutty author thinks himself part of that protected class.
Men? Just men? That's sexist. Misandrist.
I stopped reading right there. Don't need advice from nasty old sexists.
Dang...I completely forgot to pray to my gun safe today.
Thanks for reminding me, Cynthia
“We have let a blood-soaked gun lobby dictate our laws and regulations on firearms”
Yeah just look at how effective those laws are in Chicago. Sheesh talk about blood soaked.
She needs a “proudly unarmed homeowner” sign out front of her residence.
OK, herself. Shoulda’ known it was Cynthia tucker’d-in-the-head.
bitchy, bossy old sexists.
