The Obama administration said Friday that it was starting a program to provide lawyers for children facing deportation as it scrambles to deal with the soaring number of unaccompanied minors illegally crossing the border from Mexico.
Under the plan, the federal government will issue $2 million in grants to enroll about 100 lawyers and paralegals to represent immigrant children making their way through the immigration court system.

About 1,000 women and children, mainly from Central America, have been dropped off in Phoenix since Memorial Day weekend with little more than water, apples and potato chips.
Immigrant families in Milwaukee on Thursday protested a raid earlier in the week in which some of those detained had no criminal histories other than entering the country illegally.
Administration officials have been trying to cope with a surge of unaccompanied children that has overwhelmed border officials as well the nations family and immigration court systems.
