Washington’s potato saga continues.
While the House considers a bill to include the potato in the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) food nutrition program, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is echoing First Lady Michelle Obama’s claims that including the potato is an assault on science.
“Republicans are even going after the nutrition for pregnant women and children, the WIC program. Mandating the WIC program include more white potatoes. You know, were talking about fruits, vegetables, whole grains and the rest, and they have an amendment that says more white potatoes than nutritionists recommend,” Pelosi said during her Thursday press conference.
“These assaults on essential nutritional standards are really hard to explain to anybody but we do know they reject science, they ignore clear cut facts and evidence, betray the best interest of America’s families while protecting special interest.”
“We have to do what’s right for our children and our families,” Pelosi said.
Last month, Michelle Obama was defending our families from potatoes with a commentary in the New York Times saying that adding the potato to the WIC program would “override science.”
As CNSNews.com previously noted, the Potato Council says that the First Lady's science is based on old data - not the latest government reports:
"Opponents of adding fresh potatoes to the WIC package are picking and choosing the science. Instead of relying on a 2005 report that looks at data from the mid-1990s, we argue that important federal nutrition programs should be based on the latest available science - in this case, USDA's own 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans."
"We appreciate the House and Senate members and staff who reviewed the science and the history of the WIC fruit and vegetable voucher program, and support a path forward that will allow WIC participants access to fresh potatoes."
This issue is expected to come up again in the House next Tuesday. You could call the looming debate, 'Return of the Spudeye'.

The real assault is the welfare programs that working people are having to pay for.
It’s none if her business if we choose to eat a potato or not. It’s none of her business what our children eat. It’s none of her business whether our local grammar school serves lunches or not. It’s none of her business whether our neighborhood school chooses to include potatoes in any lunches it serves. It’s none of her business how many potatoes our local school chooses to buy or serve. It’s none of her business if our local school chooses to boil, fry, or bake its potatoes. Why doesn’t she find something useful to do like maybe help stop more illegal aliens like her “man” from sneaking into this country — or she might be competent to help guide cars in the parking g lot at the next huge gun show/sale — or (as long as she promises to keep quiet for a change) she can come to our local elementary school and help peel potatoes for our children’s lunch.
Didn’t Ireland suffer mass starvation and famine when a blight killed most of the potato harvest? I believe it was called the “Great Potato Famine.”
Well, meat and potatoes built America, and deconstructionists wish to do the opposite. Both are under attack. Nutrition and climate pseudoscience are in the same dark bag of “tricks”.

Yes it is true. The potato famine sparked massive emigration. The Irish population had exploded due to the ability to grow potatos that were nutitious and kept them alive.
Every year in Germany there is a potato festival to celebrate the introduction of potato farming to Germany where the lowly potato could be grown and keep people alive.
Michelle is as ignorant as the day is long.

Why is this just about white potatoes? In my garden I grow potatoes of color and they are tasty and nutritious also.
