Immigrants weigh in on California driver license rules

LOS ANGELES (AP) — As California prepares to issue driver's licenses to immigrants in the country illegally, residents sounded off Tuesday on what documents should be accepted as proof of identity and residency in the state.

At a packed hearing in Los Angeles, scores of immigrants urged the Department of Motor Vehicles to expand the list of acceptable documents to include church and children's school records, which may be easier for some people to obtain.

"As a homemaker, we don't get a membership card or a pay stub," said Martha Escandon, 42, whose Mexican immigrant family obtained legal papers in the 1980s. Escandon said she volunteers at her South Los Angeles church and knows many mothers who could face a hard time obtaining proof of residency to apply for a license.

The hearing is one of two scheduled by the DMV for residents to weigh in on the rules for obtaining a license starting in January. California is one of 11 states that have approved issuing a driver's license for immigrants in the country illegally, according to the National Immigration Law Center, and California officials expect 1.4 million people will apply for the license in the first three years.

So now we are going to go through the kabuki dance fiction that illegals are going to have to “verify” their identity to get a driver’s license. What a load of s___t. You can make a fake pay stub on your computer. Cut the crap and just hand them out to anyone and take their word for it as to who they are.

The Mexican Embassy has been conducting traveling outreach meetings all over the state for years for the distribution of Consular ID’s.

Whose interests is the state serving—illegal aliens or the citizens of the US and residents of California? Don’t answer that.

NO, THEY DON’T. And the cops don’t even bother to ask them for it after an accident.
A cop in the City of Downey actually told me to turn the damages over to my insurance company if I wanted to try to recoup the repair costs after getting hit by an ILLEGAL ALIEN DRIVER. The GODDAMN WETBACK had no license, no insurance, nothing, except a crap japslapper pickup loaded with junk.
The cop wrote the BASTARD up for running the red light and let him go; when I asked why he wasn’t arrested, the cop told me that his place of residence was probably phony and it wouldn’t do any good.
Now that I know better, the next time I will just shoot the son of a bitch that does it to me and put a knife in his hand. Self defense you know.

Said this ages ago. If this is forced on us, all fake documents should be required to be made by American fake document makers.

Was discussed here almost a decade ago where Tennessee DLs weren't being accepted as Id in other states due to their suspect history. Never saw how that got resolved. I guess California residents will find out.

Why require ANY documents at all?

Remember the Arizona ‘Papers please’ law, as Maddow called it?

Asking non-whites for any documents or ID is obviously racist.
Just ask the Wise Latino. She declared it and made it law.
