U.N. to intervene in Detroit water shutoffs: Talks on 'human-rights violations' planned w/Obama

Watch out, Detroit. Here comes the United Nations.

WND has learned that after issuing a statement last week condemning Detroit’s decision to send water shut-off notices to tens of thousands of customers behind in their payments, the U.N now plans to conduct confidential policy discussions with the Obama administration to be followed by a formal public report to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

On Monday, the U.N. Human Rights Council’s office in Geneva confirmed to WND that the U.N. plans to intervene directly in the Detroit water crisis, determined to apply international law to judge the U.S. in violation of human rights to safe water.

Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, DWSD, announced in March it would send shut-off notices to customers with balances more than $150 overdue or who are more than two months behind in their payments. The department, which said nearly half of the 324,000 water and sewerage accounts are overdue, has put out 46,000 notices since March. About 4,500 accounts have had their water shut off....

“It’s a horror story where the foolish/ignorant home owner (and lender) thinks it is likely that the home value will soon shoot up 20%.”

Actually, I suspect it was more because the government guaranteed the loan. The bank had no skin in the game so what do they care?

there is no reason for them not to pay a water bill

FWIW, water and sewer bills in some midwest urban areas have skyrocketed because of needed repairs and EPA regulations. In spite of that, I'd suspect as you do that most of these people could afford their water bills if they gave up something else.

That's bad, for sure. But for the sake of the rest of us, they should have a minimal amount of water to stay healthy and clean.

This is an idiotic ploy by an idiotic city. So many other ways to prioritize costs. This isn’t one of them.

Unless it was truly a liars loan there were SOME standards. Otherwise why not lend out 200%+ and make Uncle Sam the fall guy?

Well, gosh, seems like the easy answer would be directions to public spigots that they can go get their water, just like ALMOST ALL OF THE REST OF THE WORLD.

There, crisis averted. Chicago is welcome to send me a big gigantic check for this quick and useful solution to this problem.

Oh, and of course, wheel chair ramps for these spigots, EPA water quality inspections, an inspector at each spigot to ensure that no one is using awful single use plastic bags to hold their bottles....

The best semi-humorous suggestion I've heard is to give Detroit to Canada. Let them take the profits from the port and bridges and use it to run the city.

That solution might disrupt its demographic priorities.

No reason they couldn't be US citizens with authorization to live in Detroit but not anywhere else in Canada. Call it limited dual citizenship or whatever.

It might sound like a dumb idea. Many really good ideas started out sounding dumb, then got tweeked a little.

Right. As a friend of mine says, people have the time and money for the things they want.

Lol. Cellphones are free to them. They just value partying above providing their children with clean water. We should cut out all checks to them and just provide clean water and a community garden. Then they would have to earn their crack money.

There is no reason for them to not pay a water bill.

But there's the best (or worst, depending upon your sensibilities) reason - because they don't have to. Watch and see, Øbozo will conspire with the UN, playing them as the "bad cop" to his "good cop". Then he will bail out the Detroit deadbeats and stick the rest of us with the bill.

Shouldn’t take the UN long to get there - aren’t a bunch of them holed up at Camp Grayling?

What could go wrong?

Depress the value on eBay for blue helmets and jeeps? It's not called "New Fallujah" for nothing.

So lesson learned folks:
Don’t pay for what you are supposed to pay for, and the UN or some other group will come in and save your sorry behind! Gotta have that money for tattoo’s, liquor, and smokes! Water bill? Whatever, give me my money!

I see this as another calculated invasion, orchestrated by Jugears himself. He knows he’s getting short, so he’s inviting the UN in here to continue his madness. Don’t let them set one foot in any American city!
