President Obama on Wednesday predicted the Republican Party would have to "move back to the center" if it ever wanted to win another presidential election.
During an interview with "Marketplace" radio show, Obama defended his recent effort to sidestep Congress on a number of issues this year in the face of inaction.
He said Republicans are unable to carry out "basic functions of government, pointing to the failure to pass immigration reform and the government shutdown last year.
"I don't think this is a permanent state of affairs, he said. I think over time the Republican Party will move back to the center, mainly because if they don't, they'll never win the presidency again.
Earlier this week, Obama called on his administration to bring him a list of executive actions he can take on immigration reform after determining House Republicans would not act this year, despite support from both parties and business groups.
"Despite all that, we still couldn't get the House of Representatives to act, primarily because of politics, primarily because they're captive of a small ideological band inside their caucus," Obama said.
During the interview, Obama also defended the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform bill passed during his first term, but said more reforms need to be made.
He noted that the law was not meant to solve all the problems of the banking system but was enacted "to prevent another catastrophic financial crisis."
He said the United States is ahead of other nations in regulating the financial sector, but more reforms are needed to prevent banks from taking "big risks because the profit incentive and the bonus incentive is there for them."
"That is an unfinished piece of business, but that doesn't detract from the important stabilization functions that Dodd-Frank were designed to address," he said.
” I think over time the Republican Party will move back to the center, mainly because if they don’t, they’ll never win the presidency again. “
OK. Who here really thinks that obama wants to help Republicans win the presidency?
Barrack Bizarre Obama.
The DemocRATS moved so far left of the old Soviet Union and North Korea that they fell off the charts. They are still “winning” elections. This is baloney.
Several weeks ago Karl Rove was doing his spiel on FoxNews, after one of the Tuesday primaries.
Rove was talking about what the general GOP needs to do to win. He let it slip (I bet he wished he could edit the transcript of that live interview) that one of the things the GOP needed to win was to become more ‘conservative’.
I dropped my coffee cup! He actually said the c-word and that it was the direction the GOP needed to go.
The FoxNews host either missed that or chose to ignore it, as the interview continued.
Sorry, but Carson would be chewed up and spit out in the election cycle. He has no political experience and would be red meat for the MSM and Dems.
You think what Palin got from the MSM/Dems was rough? They would up that against Carson.
In Pollyanna Land he might be an excellent candidate. He may be the greatest surgeon in history. Okay, let him run for dog catcher and other elective local positions to see what kind of a polician he would be.
We already have one OJT novice screwing up the nation. We need a strong one to correct the current mess and, regrettably, that is going to require a strong politician who knows how to get things done in biggest political environment on the planet.
When you consider the Supreme Court ruled just a week ago that Obamas recess appointments were an abuse of power, the timing of this latest go it alone announcement is particularly interesting.
That press conference was borderline bizarre given the timing of it, given his attitude, Setmayer explained. I called it a petulant temper tantrum thrown by the President.
i agree... and i said the same thing about Palin when she was the VP nominee... i believe they brought her on the world stage just a bit too soon... i get in trouble every time i say that... i get accused of being a Palin hater--which i am most definitely not... just to clarify--i am not saying that Palin does not have more experience than Ben Carson... she certainly has a lot more in the way of governing...
Obama, the most unpopular president since WW2, is proof of the adage “those who can’t, teach”. He can’t do much of anything right so he constantly lectures everyone else on just how to do it.
this says a lot about him... he must be awful to be around...
‘Pubbies would have go pretty far to the Right to get back to the Center.
So, the lying, Marxist, phony wants to help Republicans win an election? HA!
Obama couldn’t see the center with a telescope.
He does know that disagreeing with him is not the same as “doing nothing.”
Barack Obama won’t win another term as president without...
The Boy King doesn’t WANT to see the GOP win again, all he’s trying to do is see that they water down their politics and come over to his side when they eventually DO win again...
Coming from someone thats been wrong 100% of the time
Demographics is destiny. The GOP won’t win another Presidential election because it can’t capture the votes of people for whom being Democrat is seen as part of their racial/ethnic/cultural identity.
The only thing the GOP can do is dig in it’s feet on Constitutional principles and fight every attempt by Democrat presidents to drag this country further Left tooth and nail.
For once Obama agrees with the Republican party liberals who will do anything to prevent and keep conservatives from taking over.
Maybe when the RINOs are finally deposed, they will be like Eric Cantor’s people, and transfer the Republican treasury to the Democrats, just to prevent conservatives from having it.
