Contributing to Free Republic (vanity)
July 13, 2914 | me

Posted on 07/13/2014 8:33:32 PM PDT by Leaning Right

In the past, I have hesitated about contributing to Free Republic. Utility bills are coming due, and my house needs a new roof.

But then I think about what I'd be willing to pay if this were a pay site. And then I think about all the good Free Republic does. I'll be sending out a money order, and soon.

Just something I had to say.

...you would be surprised at what they are charging for a perl based site vice the “real” expenditures”...

Just what's that supposed to mean?

...the owners should put up their quarterly expense costs...

It's none of your business. It's nobody's business. We're guests here thanks to the generosity of Patriot Jim Robinson. How he chooses to spend the contributions to Free Republic is solely up to him. If he offers to provide any information, it's an act of kindness. Being nosy about our host is bad form indeed. It strikes me as not much different than visiting a friend and asking to see his checkbook. I have the utmost respect and admiration for the boss and think it best not to pry into his affairs.

Exactly.

The monthly budget for systems & programming is chicken feed. One normally pays WELL above that for just babysitting a server. If the admin has to actually touch the keyboard ... cha-ching!

Just sayin’.

OK... Here's a thought: if you are so convinced you can do a better job, or at least a cheaper version of this website you seem to have such a low opinion of, please feel free to start your own "more-better" site and promote it however you wish.

On your own dime. Not ours.

In the meantime, you can probably find a more suitable audience for your unhappiness at a website which would be more in line with your shared opinions such as the DU website, or perhaps aljazzeeruh.

Thank you for sharing (/sarc), and mind the door on the way out.

Well said! Free Republic is supreme when it comes to breaking news and informed option. As America's premiere site for Conservative Activism, those who don't mind their own business by being ungracious to our host are merely showing their communist leanings.

Thank you. I actually wanted to vent quite a bit more rudely, but he probably posted and ran off, not to mention I did not want to get the posts pulled for saying what I really felt about his opinion(s). Obnoxious twit, he is.

I love contributing and have been doing so quietly for
Many years. But I just wish there were a way to have FR meet the phone and tablet world. It makes me sad that I can’t even freep on my phone because the font is either too small or else you can’t see the sides of the lines.

I always wonder how much it would cost to adjust it or change the format. There are many forums where you can see everything in a decent sized font, upload pics and gifs quickly, use html, quote things in clear obvious blocks, and FR always stays the same.

Content on FR is superlative (depending on who’s commenting, but usually). But the structure is outgrown. The search feature doesn’t work. When you click away on a link and return, you don’t return to where you left so you have to search for it, and it just isn’t handy for mobile use.

What would it take to make some changes to bring it up to date?

Good point, a Free Republic app to make all that easier would be nice. Couldn’t we just rip off some other open source app??

Free Republic is worth more than ANY dollar amount we could assign to it. Jim Robinson could put annoying but revenue-generating ads on the site. He doesn't. FR is THE Conservative site. Nothing else can even come close, and I am thankful I have this place to come to every day to maintain my sanity.

I'm giving extra this Freepathon to make up for those who don't know what they've got 'til it's gone.

I love it but I’m not the one to do it. I am no techie. But I’d be willing to chip in for it.

A reading of your post seems to indicate that you, a registered user of this Conservative Forum since Jun 3, 2013, are doing so without donating since per your logic, monies are not needed since website, management, and hosting are merely paltry expenses. Even further, by implication you are seemingly saying that Jim Rob and company are running a scam by asking for donations.

Since only 5% of registered FReepers actually support this site, your comments place you in the realm of the 95% who are FReeploaders.

Doing your thing on someone else's dime is not a conservative value, but does fit in with the 'Gibemedats' that are being supported on wage-earners tax dollars.

Going further, your comment seems to lie within the post-type of a certain ilk of antiFReepers who visit these pages to disrupt and discourage. (Could that have a bearing on being banned previously? Are you a retread? What was/is your name of TBL?)

Having said that, it is of note that your name does not appear on the list of Dollar-a-Day donors. It is absent from the 300 club. There is also no mention of your ID in the list of Monthly Donors. While recognizing that these lists are non-inclusive and opt-in only, your absence might be an indication that you are just a FReeploader. Skating on another's dime. Like so many Obamavoters. While attempting to cover yourself with a patina of conservatism.

In case this is an unjust rendering of your wording, intent, and personhood, it is highly recommended that you redeem yourself by performing the following TWO acts.

First CLICK HERE and follow the prompts. A sizable donation will be most appreciated. And needed. And will shorten the FReepathon. You might choose to make that a monthly donation. And when you do so, opt to have your name on the monthly donor's list so no one can call you a FReeploader again or surmise by your lack of donating that you are a TBL DemocraticanimalPosteriorOrafice.

Second, contact the FReepathon Team (or even Jim Rob - he'll give you the info) and volunteer your time and expertise (which you seem to feel you possess in sufficient quantity as to cast aspersions on FR management) to the effort to get the 95% of FR users who are non-donors (you know - FReeploaders, possibly, due to lack of evidence to the contrary, just like you) to donate to the support of this unique Conservative Forum that you are using.

You know, so you won't be thought of as a FReeploader. Or a TBL antiFReeper..

Otherwise, take Buckeye Texan's advise.

Do you Jim and John would mind? I imagine the site architecture would make it a bit tougher than a free app maker would allow.

Well, if we can read and post, even off the main forum, it would be a nice start.

Try the Opera browser. They have both an Opera Mini browser and an Android version that might be able to help. Give them a try -they are free, after all.

The first free app site is too simple, it just puts it in a browser-like box. Looks as clunky as it does on any phone. I’ll keep trying.

The app would have to be able to disregard all those keyword and stuff that crowd the top of the page on a phone/tablet/mobile. There is probably some kind of code for that? I dunno.

The sidebars would have to go. The headlines can stay but the description would have to be very very short.

Here is another “app maker” thing, this time for Android phones/tablets.

http://andromo.com/

Actually, this one doesn’t look as simplistic as the others.

There are site-specific browsers. Someone could make one for FR tweaked for Phones/tablets and boom there it is.

That he did. Hasn't uttered a peep since 12:42 AM (EDT)..

get the posts pulled for saying what I really felt

But you could respectfully suggest that he is possibly a DemocraticanimalPosteriorOrafice.

It's the 'polite' way to call him an a.....e ;-)

I don’t think we need an app.

I think all we need is a “Site-Specific Browser” (just this site) pre-set to make it easy to navigate on a phone/tablet.
