Contributing to Free Republic (vanity)
July 13, 2914 | me

Posted on 07/13/2014 8:33:32 PM PDT by Leaning Right

In the past, I have hesitated about contributing to Free Republic. Utility bills are coming due, and my house needs a new roof.

But then I think about what I'd be willing to pay if this were a pay site. And then I think about all the good Free Republic does. I'll be sending out a money order, and soon.

Just something I had to say.

An "Anime"? That would work, I suppose, but I originally thought about outing him as an Infernal Rectalvue Sphincterling -but I usually reserve it for the actual agents therein once they expose their bias.

It ramped up from there, and quickly.

Try taking your phone browser on this site, going into your settings and taking off the sidebars, keywords and putting the main page on headers only.

The little free app site I went to... the app was pretty much just a browser set to only go to Latest Articles, Latest Comments, Mail and Settings.

But it had all the same clutter with the keywords and sidebars.

I browse the site regularly on my Android phone, in fact I'm writing this reply on my phone. Seems to work fine for me, albeit the keyboard lacks an obvious way to make angle brackets, so HTML support via some Javascript “richtext” editor could be added to improve the experience. I did disable my sidebars, or rather moved them to top and bottom via the “configure” page of this site so the index pages (latest posts et al) flow more naturally within the limited screen space.

The most I've ever had to do was double tap the screen to enlarge text, my eyes were never so great to begin with and age certainly isn't helping lol.

Don't need a special phone app, I've seen some forums offer them, I've tried them, none seem to offer anything worthwhile. If somebody could make a case for an Android app I'd listen, but I can't imagine anything except local caching that couldn't be implemented server-side and a basic web browser.

Funny thing is that his topic came up on DU long ago, “FR is bilking its users.” A DU admin jumped in there to note that FR’s funding requirements looks right. To me that’s a pretty strong comment supporting our numbers. Some of those antiFreeper types try to argue the whole thing could be dumped onto $19.99/mo hosting service. Seriously, these people have no idea.

I post *almost* exclusively from my Android phone. I don’t get the request for an app. I have very little trouble and the trouble I do have is because I hate on-screen keyboards and I have fat thumbs.

FR works just fine for me on Android. I’ve also posted from my Kindle, my family members’ iphones & ipads, and the TV. No problems there either.

Chrome, Safari, Dolphin, Tor. All good.

Thanks, but we make no telephone solicitations. No calls, no direct mail, no email spamming, no advertising, no marketing whatsoever

All true. You also won't consider a small fee so that everyone that posts here pays their own way.

You are a capitalist in every way, except the way that you run your business and then you become a compassionate conservative {moderate socialist} where a few pay so that many others can play.

I pay but resent supporting the people with the obama phone attitude {or any other free loaders}.

You are not the only one with tight money situations, many of us are seniors on SS. That $20 monthly I send keeps FR up and running. Even the $10 amount is helpful.

Throw all your change in a jar for a month, see what it comes to. More than you'd think. Make it a FR Piggy bank.

FR PIGGY BANK just 75 cents per day is a $22 donation. Would you miss that tiny amount? less than a cup of coffee.

When you pay with a credit card, or a money order, check all you get is a thank you card or email. And you can elect not to have either. If you send money via USPS ask for no thank you card to save the money for FR to stay up and running. Just put your email addy in with it to get a thank you.

FR does not sell donor list.

If FR needs emergency funds for a repair outside the norm, there will be a Freepathon in order to obtain the funds.

"FR is going to just fine. The lights won’t go out nor will the posts. We will see some interruptions which are typical towards the very end of every drive but that is just normal for “OMG!!! Hurry, DONATE!!” type thing."

That's a lie. There have been no service interruptions since the servers were upgraded....I think about two years ago, more or less.

" The owners aren’t hurting "

Why would you want them to be?

"and this site is basic by nature with limited bandwidth costs. I’ll probably get banned again for saying so; but the owners should put up their quarterly expense costs; it would make it a lot easier to justify donating (and I think you would be surprised at what they are charging for a perl based site vice the “real” expenditures”)."

The expenses ARE posted here. But I guess you'd rather bitch than search, huh?

I hate a freeloader.

I hear you. I have worked in R&D and Production for over 20 years and I well know how much investment in infrastructure can cost any establishment. The few times I have dabbled in websites I have quickly found out how the costs can add up, especially as the size of the site and the number of users as well as its bandwidth increase and is a significant and never-ending factor in its operating requirements.

Add in hardware costs, constant backups to keep essential data, 24/7 system support, maintenance, upgrades when necessary, expansion due to increasing usage, and the occasional need to be woken up at oh-dark-thirty to come in and rescue a site that has suddenly gone down and needs to be fixed ASAP (to name but a few)... these things are not for the faint of heart, and all the associated costs are not something that can be handled by your typical low-tier hosting provider.

Thanks, John, for all the hard work you and your dad do to keep this site running. I remember the times we had the occasional hiccup and we were all left wondering what had happened to this site we have come to rely on.

There's always going to be a complainer or two looking to lob the occasional stink bomb, but those of us who have been here for awhile know that you work hard at keeping things up and running. There is literally no substitute for this site, and I have a constant dread that someday it might not be there.

Thanks so much, again. May FreeRepublic be a constant banner for the best in Conservative principles, and a constant thorn in the black hearts of Liberal Loons everywhere and every hour of every day, 24/7.

I have contributed when I can as well, usually quietly and whatever I can. Do not even want to think about what it would be like if this site were no longer here.

You know, most browsers have an enlargement function for those sites which you have difficulty reading. I use the Opera browser and it not only has a quick keyboard shortcut for that, there is another one for fit-to-screen as well. Shift-click on a link will open it up in a new tab and jump to it, and Ctrl-click will open it in a background tab. Or use the menubar. Try it, it's really quite handy -especially the menubar for most operations.

The "search" function has never been FR's most salient feature, but I usually bypass it by using the ixquick.com search engine and including FreeRepublic in the keywords to search which works quite well. The Pings and Mail notifications on the post pages no longer function either but that is not really a problem. They used to turn red whenever you get a new post to you or FReepmail but they stopped functioning years ago. John could probably drop them from the pages if he wished to and it would not affect how I read or post, but they are not a necessary function of the FR experience.

The notifications work just fine in the Index page when you refresh so no worries really.

Other than that, one of the big selling points here has always been the simplicity of the site which makes it quick to load, refresh, browse, and post. More "features" added on will begin slowing it down, which is not good for those of us with limited net capabilities.

Oh, forgot to add: yes, that really is a strong comment, especially considering the source.

I simply dismissed the accusation as baseless as soon as the loon made it, since I already knew that you could not run a site like this from something like a GoDaddy provider, and you have always been upfront about what it costs to keep it running.

I repeat My suggestion that he can go and start up a site all on his own and try to make it work -on HIS OWN dime, not by posting complaints here.

Agreed, Gail. As anyone here can attest from My previous posts, I am not exactly wealthy. I am a Disabled American Veteran and the only source I have of support is whatever earnings I can make whenever I can. I don't even qualify for SSD, for god's sake.

But I contribute what I can whenever I can. I have had to cringe and bite My tongue sometimes when some people have made comments about some of the low contribution amounts they have noticed during the FReepathons since I was likely one of those amounts they were speculating about, but I have also given more whenever I can.

This site is the most important one I know of, and nowhere else do I see anything that is near as helpful and informative. Some have noticed that only 5% of registered members are the ones that keep FR running. More and more I am beginning to get annoyed that so many think that there is no need to contribute since after all FR is still here.

Some people simply do not realize the value of anything until it is no longer there.

Well Mr/Mrs/Ms/Huh Ghost, I note that your loquacity has apparently been stifled. I'm so sorry that you were outed as a FReeploading, TBLretreaded antifreeper type. (You did note, didn't you that I was not the only one to suggest you were a freeloader, yes?)

Since you have nothing to say since 0dark42 either you are hiding in a corner or lacking in sufficient defenses to refute the apparent truths about you that have been put forward.

There is still time to redeem yourself. Go back to HERE and follow the directions.

And what was your TBL logon again?
