Fast food workers vow civil disobedience (Demand $15/hr. minimum wage, unions)
The Tampa Tribune / The Associated Press ^ | July 26, 2014

VILLA PARK, Ill. — Comparing their campaign to the civil rights movement, fast food workers from across the country voted today to escalate their efforts for $15-an-hour pay and union membership to include nonviolent civil disobedience.

More than 1,300 workers gathered in a convention in center in suburban Chicago to discuss the future of a campaign that has spread to dozens of cities in less than two years. Wearing T-shirts that said “Fight for $15” and “We Are Worth More,” the workers cheered loudly and said they would win if they stuck together.

“People are just fed up,” said Cindy Enriquez, 20, of Phoenix....

Sounds like some of the “newly arrived” WILL be able to find work on their work permits. Heck, they’ll work for $7.15/hr no questions asked. Well at least til laraza tell them the white man is stickin’ it to them.

I suspect in 10 yrs the typical fast food place will have 2 employees per shift, basically to do logistics and sanitation.

If they are fed up, they should quit the job.

They also need a reality check. Fast food hired help in the labor market just isn’t worth what they seek.

They also need another reality check, which is that the jobs in the economy that pay well require schooling, training, college, and/or experience gained in lower level jobs which qualify them for the better jobs.

Bottom line — They can and should seek out other opportunities if they feel under paid and under valued. They should also educate themselves about what it takes to get the better paying jobs they would like to have, and do what it takes to get education and training to fill such jobs.

1,300 out of how many million? All three of our daughters were fast food workers for 3-4 years of high school and college. They are all working professional jobs now.

It is called graduation and moving up. Ever heard of it?

The machines already exist, they just have to be purchased and installed:

Well, anecdotal evidence where I live, is that most fast food workers were not born in this country. I can’t say anything about work permits or legal status. Just observing, that we no longer see big numbers of young American born people in such jobs.

But many people now are staying with fast-food restaurants for years, because they’re often the only ones available, workers said.

There will be at least 3.

The 2 you point out and a third to check your permit to see what Moocher Obama’s food police will allow you to eat.

Let’s run ‘em over a scale. From what I see, I’d bet 8 out of 10 are plenty well “fed” as well. And let’s put all the smartphones on the table and see how they shake out too, and then check the kind of cars in the parking lot.

You know what would be hilarious: A one-minute ad showing the corporate board of some fictitious restaurant chain giving in to the demands, then one month later (within the ad) shows customers placing their orders at the drive-thru, only to cancel and speed through when they hear the prices of the food.

And then the employees whining why no one is buying food, and the store manager calmly explains the effects of the minimum wage and that they're going to be fired and replaced by robots.

Legal Plunder Has Many Names

Now, legal plunder can be committed in an infinite number of ways. Thus we have an infinite number of plans for organizing it: tariffs, protection, benefits, subsidies, encouragements, progressive taxation, public schools, guaranteed jobs, guaranteed profits, minimum wages, a right to relief, a right to the tools of labor, free credit, and so on, and so on. All these plans as a whole — with their common aim of legal plunder — constitute socialism.

They can demand whatever they want and it won’t matter, there won’t be enough customers that can afford the product to keep the business open, but hey neither they or the predatory unions goading them have the slightest idea of how business works.

Perhaps a union could front them some of their money so they could open up their own burger joint, dominate the marketplace, and distribute the profits directly to the workers (and payback the union for the loan) Would they unionize?

Back in the 80s there was a well written snarky fictional essay called “GM Burgers” where the UAW organized McDonalds and the company went out of business in a couple years.

One of the actual problems unions face is that most name brand fast foods are actually fairly small franchise operations. So the effort to organize each one is pretty huge relative to the number of employees of each franchise owner.

It ain’t so much the fast food workers pushing this as it is the unions. Why are the unions pushing it? Because union wages are a multiple of minimum wage

Squirting ketchup on a McBurger and salting fries aren’t exactly jobs requiring a high level of technical skill. Half of them ought to maybe try graduating high school first before they demand a ‘living wage’.

Roger that. My wife worked a bunch of fast food jobs and TG&Y and K-mart so she could pay her way through college. Of course I don’t think you could pay your way doing that today but then again, who said you MUST finish in 4 years? Our oldest is 48 and just now working on her doctorate degree. In the Bush era of prosperity, fast food was derided by Pelosi as “McJobs”.

Now in the ongoing Baraqqi Depression, they are viewed as career occupations.

They'll only quicken the markets transformation to the inevitable. Most fast food workers will be replaced by automated processes.

The technicians that stock and service the machines will likely make better money.

Actually, I went to eat at a chain restaurant this week.

There was a touch screen device on the table that you placed your own order on and paid your bill.

Yeah..the server brought your food. But even he said...I don’t care about the tip. Just answer the questionnaire at the end and rate me well.

These folks demanding $15 per hour...it will bite them in the nether regions.

Used to go to the one in downtown Philly (probably Broad St., though it could have been Market) as a child in the early 60s; thought it was the neatest thing. Maybe it's why I learned to love Japan with all its vending machines...

The Chili's near my home has tableside ordering using a touch interface (not an iPad.) The only time you see "wait staff" at your table is to take a drink order and bring refills, bring your meal and ask if everything is ok.

The rest is all done via a touch interface with a credit card swipe.

Kinda prefer not being pestered by wait staff incessantly myself. Much more pleasant "dining experience" if you can call Chili's that.......

The math of fast food restaurants is pretty much set in stone..a certain % of your cost is for food, another is for labor, another for the facility ( rent, mortgage, utities..etc..)double the labor cost, and a Big Mac will go up by about 65%..and how many will sell at that price?..and how many layoffs will then occur?
