Have New York Democrats added intimidation to their GOTV strategy?

In 2004 I worked for the Republican Party in the county where I lived to help drive GOTV.

We have a secret ballot, but if you vote is not secret. The political parties have access to who is in their party and how often they vote, if ever.

Part of the strategy for my county's GOP was to really hit hard the "high propensity" voters. Meaning people who voted 3 out of the last 4 elections or 4 out of the last 4 elections. 2's were not a priority, and 1's were almost completely ignored, because resources were limited.

Basically our efforts were run-of-the-mill, by campaign standards. We would call, door knock, and recruit 3's and 4's before the election, and on election day it was a lot of checking poll sheets to see who hasn't voted yet, call, knock, rinse, repeat, until the polls closed.

Our job was to be a friendly reminder. If people didn't want to talk to us, or if they didn't want to vote it wasn't our job to hector them into doing so.

That's not true if your a Democrat in New York state. If YOU don't vote the New York State Democratic Committee IS going to take note, and when they do YOU better be prepared to explain yourself.

Below is a shot of the correspondence Democrats in New York are receiving. Most of the letter is fine, it's the last paragraph that's a kind of a problem (to put it nicely)...

Love the parental tone:

Many organizations (like the Democrats) monitor turnout...and are disappointed...

You're not a member of the party, you're a subject in the party's kingdom, and you will pay tribute.

In all honesty, based on my experience, political parties aren't as organized or efficient as people might think. After elections things get very very quiet, and mining that kind of data would be fairly difficult and costly, I would think. So I don't know how much they intend to make good on this "threat."

That said, whether they mean it or not is irrelevant to the fact that this. Is. Creepy. Especially in an ostensibly free society with the political party that touts itself as liberal. Of course, this is yet another example of them being anything but...

Scott Johnson at Power Line sums this up best:

It is impossible to imagine the furor that would accompany this story if it were Republicans rather than Democrats taking a page out of 1984 playbook (as the cutline on the letter revealed, screenshot below). What is to be said? The Democrats thrive on the immunity afforded them by their mainstream media adjunct. They lack the constraints that decency imposes on the rest of us.

Indeed.

Yes.

Nothing new for them.

Love the parental tone:

Uh... "parental" isn't exactly the term that immediate springs to mind.

But it is kind of like getting a visit from "the Family," if you know what I mean.

Its not who votes but who counts the votes that matters. (And how many times if you are a Democrat)

The message: You know it would be terrible if something happened to one of you’se or your beautiful house just because you didn’t vote.
