Jonathan Gruber, Romneycare, and Obamacare
Nov 13, 2014 | self

Posted on 11/13/2014 8:31:57 AM PST by Ray76

Obama used the Massachusetts law developed by Gruber as the blueprint for Obamacare

When asked in 2012 what were the differences between Romney’s and Obama’s plans he said "They are the same bleeping bill! More seriously, the core of the ACA [Affordable Care Act] is exactly the same as what we did here in Massachusetts"

Romneycare was held up as a success. It became the exemplar model. But in fact it is a failure.

Gruber himself says the "dirty secret" is that a large portion of the cost of Romneycare was paid by the Feds. Here is Gruber and the "dirty secret": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtnEmPXEpr0#t=720

The federal government subsidized Massachusetts, who is going to subsidize the federal government?

A 2011 study by the Beacon Hill Institute titled "Massachusetts Health Care Reform stunts job growth and investment" found:

Increased costs, fewer jobs, lower wages.

Romenycare and Obamacare, both from the mastermind central planner Gruber, are both frauds and failures from top to bottom.

A lot of Americans and some freepers have amnesia when it comes to this documented ObamaCare history in Congress!

Every single democrat senator and every single democrat congressit voted to make Obamacare the law without reading nor understanding what they voted for.

Every single Republican in Congress voted against this Obamacare.

So the very stupid rats in congress own ObamaCare as per their highly paid Herr Gruber‘s You Tube comments.

Mitt gave Romneycare an A[?!] and calls it his greatest achievement proudly highlighting it in his recently commissioned $30,000 portrait:

The portrait depicts the governor seated at the front edge of his desk wearing his trademark business suit. Beside him is a small framed photo of his wife, Ann, and ... [wait for it] ... a copy of the health care reform law he called his greatest achievement.

However, this "great achievement"'s spending has doubled in the last two years, jumping from $630 million in 2007 to an estimated $1.3 billion in fiscal year 2009.

And yet the gOpE and Karl Rove made him their 2012 POTUS candidate. Please, never again. Or another Bush.

It is a HUGE myth that Romneycare and Obamacare had much in common. Here are the key and essential differences:

1) Romneycare was focused on the needs of just one state alone, where such policies are permitted under the Constitution and the 10th Amendment. Obamacare is unconstitutional and applies to all 50 states.

2) Romneycare only affected the 8% of the population in MA who lacked health coverage. Obamacare effects and impacts all Americans.

3) Romneycare did not raise a penny of new taxes. Obamacare has dozens of new taxes.

Yes Romneycare did mandate the uninsured to purchase health coverage (private insurance)-—something it does have in common with Obamacare-—but states can and do require residents to purchase insurance such as automobile insurance.

It is a big lie to compare Romneycare to Obamacare. They have very little in common. It is like comparing an ant to and elephant.

Gruber designed both plans, he disagrees with you.

It is true, Obamacare borrowed some things from Romneycare, most notably the mandate. But other than that there is very little similarity between the two programs. Obamacare is a typical Democrat entitlement program, a huge one size fits all scheme, designed to redistribute wealth, raise taxes, and dramatically increase the size of government. Romneycare was very modest in comparison and did none of those things.

I don’t give a flying rip what Gruber says about anything.

My overall point is that Romneycare has very little in common with Obamacare. Comparing Romneycare to Obamacare is like comparing an ant to an elephant. I stand by those comments and I don’t care what Gruber says or thinks.

With his gift for colorful language, such as calling Americans "stupid"---Gruber said, "Romneycare and Obamacare are the same bleeping bill! More seriously, the core of the ACA [Affordable Care Act] is exactly the same as what we did here in Massachusetts."

==================================================

THIS JUST IN Obama's running scared---trying to sideline Jonathan Gruber (who said Americans were stupid). We have just learned the asinine Prof Gruber worked hand-in-glove w/ Obama and facilitated Obama's immigration reform atrocity. Read on.

=================================================

Freeper PJ COMIX POSTED: Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber (who called Americans "stupid") has done a lot of consulting work for the Obama Admin---Gruber has been to the WH a dozen times (even more than the head of the CIA).

A Google search from the middle of 2010 until mid June of this year found Gruber was deeply involved in projects involving health care for illegals.

(PDF DOCUMENT on this topic, "Undocumented Immigrants and Health Care Reform" published on August 31, 2012 with Gruber's name all over it).

Gruber's name pops up over and over again starting with this at the beginning on Page 2: "Funding for this report was provided by a grant from The Commonwealth Fund. Special data runs were provided by Jonathan Gruber at MIT."

I agree with post to certain extent. States do not require motorist to buy issurance for themselves, only the title company does. You are required to carry insurance in the event you hit someone else. This make owning and operating a motot vehicle economically possible. If I chose not to drive, I am not required to buy insurance at all. Otherwise, your posting is informative.

Both RomneyCARE 1.0 and ObamaCARE (RomneyCARE 1.1)
ARE IDENTICAL. They bring fewer docs, higher prices,
longer waits, and in Mass. deaths by pharmacy, too.

I don’t give a flying rip what Gruber says about anything. My overall point is that Romneycare has very little in common with Obamacare.

Well ... except for the overall concept of intrusive nanny-state government and empowerment of the State to oversee what it has ZERO BUSINESS overseeing.

Trapped, Romneycare was AS WRONG and BAD and TYRANNICAL as Obamacare because it was created on the same flawed premise. Saying Romneycare and Obamacare "have very little in common" is correct in the same way that Coke has very little in common with Pepsi.

As for the argument that states require people to have auto insurance -- the insurance is FOR OTHERS you might hit with your auto and if you decline to drive, you don't need insurance. With Romneycare or with Obamacare, this government ownership of your body REQUIRES that if you are alive, you purchase health insurance approved by government for yourself.

THERE is an example -- the one between required auto insurance and required medical insurance -- where the two really ARE as different as night and day.

Both have state exchanges, both have an individual mandate, both have business mandates, and both have subsidies.

Massachusetts spending on health care was 23% of the state fisc in 2000, and 25% in 2006, but it has climbed to 41% for 2013. source: http://online.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887323968304578249694095831444

Romneycare has received federal subsidy, and has caused tax increases. Massachusetts is one state, not fifty, so naturally the size of the programs differs. Aside from the scale of the programs and differences in threshold values, the architecture of the plans is the same.

What is also forgotten was the ‘help’ from the Heritage Foundation for supporting Romneycare. Disgusting.

When you compare and contrast the two, there are some items which are different as you list. However, the similarities are just too numerous that any attempt to suggest they greatly differ is a futile exercise in nuance ... and one that a simple cartoon can dismiss:

1) Romneycare was focused on the needs of just one state alone, where such policies are permitted under the Constitution and the 10th Amendment. Obamacare is unconstitutional and applies to all 50 states.

Romneycare was the 2006 flagship accomplishment that was going to take Mitt Romney into the White House in 2008, I doubt that he had nothing else in mind in regards to Romney/Obama care for the nation.

Yes it is true there was a subsidy in Romneycare.

But rather than raise taxes, redistribute income, or spend additional money, Romneycare simply rediverted Medicaid funds already allocated to the state to pay for the subsidy. This was approved by the GWB Administration.

So Romneycare

1) Did not increase government spending.
2) Did not raise taxes
3) Did not redistribute wealth.

It required the 8% of the people in MA who did not have coverage to obtain it.

Many of these uninsured people would walk into hospitals and clinics, receive treatment and care, and then left the taxpayers stuck with the tab. The whole intent of Romneycare was to put an end to people gaming or free riding the system and sticking it to the taxpayer.
