VA: Alexandria Police Misinform Businesses about Open Carry
Gun Watch ^ | 9 December, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

The above flyer was being handed out to local businesses in Alexandria Virginia  recently.   A VCDL member observed it and was able to take a picture of the flyer, with the cooperation of the local business owner.  From an VCDL email:

The flyer particularly endangers 18 to 20 year olds as it incorrectly tells a store owner that if they see someone under 21-years-old with a handgun on their hip, that is illegal! That is NOT true and having the police show up on a bogus “man with a gun” call endangers everyone unnecessarily.

The flyer also makes these other FALSE claims about the law, which again could lead to unnecessary man-with-a-gun calls to the police:

* Open carry is not legal in churches

* Open carry is not legal in government buildings (we’ll show that’s not true when we flood their city hall on Saturday, December 13th - see below).
Similar situations have occurred in other Southern states.  Sheriffs are said to have promoted "gun free zone" signs in Georgia, in Mississippi, and a police department in Arkansas.

It is an abuse of power for police and sheriffs to "educate" businesses to discriminate against people exercising their rights by distributing false information.   I firmly believe that privately owned businesses should be able to  do business with whom they chose.  I also believe that the government should not be in the business of not so subtly advising the businesses who they should discriminate against.

I suspect that this will not work well for the Sheriff's department.

Police conspiring to deprive people of their rights.

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward. ”― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
======================================================================== Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with. ”― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Can’t imagine why police would lie to people about their gun rights...

It usually comes down from the top.

My former county Sheriff lobbied hard against passing our carry laws in Michigan. Today we have a much friendlier sheriff.

Does not everyone remember the words of a policeman back in 1968?

“If only us cops had guns, us cops would not get shot!”

Yeah. The SOB was requiring jail inmates to sign anti carry petitions upon their release from jail. That was illegal in a few different ways.
