The "moderate" Bush will contest the evangelical vote because next to big donors, theyre his most loyal base.
Jeb Bush famously told us that to win the White House, a Republican presidential candidate had to be willing to lose the primary to win the general, without violating your principles. It was widely interpreted as evidence that if Bush ran, hed do it as a more centrist, reasonable candidate whod be, in his own words, much more uplifting, much more positive, and willing to stand up to fire-and-brimstone party hardliners.
Now comes the news that Bush will give the commencement address May 9 at Jerry Falwells Liberty University, where Sen. Ted Cruz announced his own presidential campaign. Its just more evidence that Bush is not really a moderate or a maverick especially when it comes to the issues that matter most to the Christian right he just fools Beltway reporters into covering him that way.
Lets also face that Liberty University has become a mainstream institution within the official Republican Party, despite Falwells lifelong crusade to harmonize church and state and to smite sinners (the way God punished the nation for tolerating feminists and gays with the 9/11 attack.) The last two GOP nominees gave commencement speeches at Liberty Sen. John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012. President George H.W. Bush did the same in 1991. But it didnt appear to help any of the three shore up their weak evangelical Christian base.
Romney did particularly poorly with the Christian right: In 2012 exit polls analyzed by FiveThirtyEight, his performance with evangelicals lagged behind his overall numbers with Republicans. That softness persisted into this cycle: In a December ABC News/Washington Post survey, Romney had support from 20 percent of Republican primary voters but only 13 percent among evangelical Christians.
But while Bush is promoted as the more moderate figure in the race, in the mold of Romney, hes got much better numbers with evangelicals than the 2012 nominee because hes courted them more avidly for his father, his brother and during his own career as Florida governor. In that same December ABC News/Washington Post poll, Bush ran behind Romney with overall GOP voters, with 15 percent to Romneys 20. But he beat him among evangelicals, taking 20 percent to Romneys 13. (Romney, of course, later pulled out of 2016 speculation.)
Its the tea party that represents Bushs base weakness due to his support for Common Core, his not-unkind rhetoric on immigration and his refusal to sign Grover Norquists no-taxes pledge. From abortion to gay rights to his fanatical over-reach in the case of Terri Schiavo, though, Bush has made the Christian right happy at every turn.
On the only big social issues test of the fledgling 2016 campaign, the Indiana religious liberty law, remember that Bush defended Gov. Mike Pence harder than Pence himself. He softened his tone a little when confronted by the only voters who matter more than the Christian right: rich people. But if were going to see Bush chart a surprising, risky course to lose the primary but win the general, its not going to come at the expense of evangelicals.
So the Liberty news shouldnt be a big surprise. Bush cheerleader Jennifer Rubin depicted it as a blow to Sen. Rand Paul:

Maybe it is. But Liberty will probably find a place in the lineup for a Paul speech too they enjoy seeming like kingmakers and hell no doubt want one. None of these guys is willing to take any political risk to act on their supposed goal of widening the GOPs appeal.
JEB! is running in the wrong election! When is the elections for el presidente de mexico anyway? Should neito be concerned that his position is being challenged?
>>despite Falwells lifelong crusade to harmonize church and state and to smite sinners (the way God punished the nation for tolerating feminists and gays with the 9/11 attack.)
Where do Progs get this stuff? I’ve been a student a Liberty for 3 years and haven’t heard a word about smiting sinners.
Just curious.
Ping!
Liberty University.
TO ALL LIBERTY UNIVERISTY STUDENTS ? WHEN JEB BUSH TALKS ? WALK OUT ! ...... That will send a message to the GOPe RINOS...
A walkout protest when Jeb Bush speaks at Liberty University...
They should have a great big walk out protest when Jeb Bush speaks at Liberty University...
Where do they get it? They make it up, of course. Well, maybe they hear it from those constant voices in their heads...
The same place they find that the Tea Party is White Supremacist, lawful gun owners are KKK militia, Pro-Lifers are worse than ISIS, Ted Cruz & Sarah Palin are Dominionists bent on installing a Theocracy and the Koch Brothers want to start a Fourth Reich.
Hope these Christian students will be “wise as serpents but harmless as doves”. May they see through Jeb’s BS.......
“His not unkind rhetoric on immigration”
Rhetoric which implies that we must consent to be ruled forever by whatever tyrant appeals to Mexicans is unkind TO US.
And we reject it without apology.
If Jeb Bush is such a shoe in as the media and GOPe tells us, why then does he have to pander to the evangelicals ?
Wow, we are suddenly so popular!
And no there was no talk of smiting. But Jerry liked to win. I am told by a friend who was in the room that he once told a group of young pastor wannabes he believed in “squishing” his enemies. Having known him personally, I interpret that not in the sense of doing them personal harm, but only in the sense of utterly defeating the enemies of the Gospel. Take no prisoners. That’s why he started the law school. I am a graduate of the inaugural class. He made us promise to do everything we could to help the good guys win (not a verbatim quote). Nothing wrong with that.
And yep, a walkout on Jeb would be faaantastic! But there’s a fair chunk of younger students there who are not going to know about any of Jeb’s problems with conservatism. There ought to be an organized effort to spread the word within the student body. I’d love to see a walkout. But it would have to be massive to be visually effective. That’s a big auditorium.
Peace,
SR
Maybe have some students with Ted Cruz shirts in the audience?
Well, it’s commencement. Robes and four-cornered hats and all that. Hard to pull off a visual stunt of any kind. In fact, kind of hard to walk out on your own commencement. This wouldn’t be easy.
And when hitlary went to a black church and spoke in the manner of a black person jenjen was just tickety boo with her, right? Left panders to Black churches.........crickets, right or RINO goes to Christian University and it’s the apocalypse.
So all of a sudden the Christian block is good if voting for jeb?
Liberals...
