How Long Will Trump’s Cathartic Candidacy for Fed-Up Conservatives Last?

by VICTOR DAVIS HANSON August 13, 2015 The coarser and cruder Donald Trump becomes, and the more ill-informed on the issues he sounds, the more he coasts in the polls. Apparently, a few of his targets must be regarded as unsympathetically as their defamer. Trump is rightly mocked for cynically spreading quid pro quo money around. But he quickly counters that his critics — from Hillary Clinton to his Republican rivals — have all asked him for such cash or for favors. Trump preps little. He has no real agenda.

And he makes stuff up as he goes along. For such a New York brawler, he has thin skin, smearing his critics, often in creepy fashion. How can a former Democrat, once a pro-choice, pro-amnesty liberal and a supporter of single-payer health care, remain the godhead of the conservative base for weeks on end? The answer is that Trump is a catharsis for 15 percent to 20 percent of the Republican electorate. They apparently like the broken china shop and appreciate the raging bull who runs amok in it. Politicians and the media are seen as corrupt and hypocritical, and the nihilistic Trump is a surrogate way of letting them take some heat for a change............

I think by “nihilistic,” VDH is referring to Trump’s comments that he felt little need to go to God for forgiveness, because he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. This is VDH’s way of telling us Trump isn’t religious enough.

The truly frightening thing I am seeing at these (R)epublicrat sites is from the dead-enders ...

Thin-skin is their code for "has balls" or "doesn't roll over and surrender". Metrosexuality has arrived.

The other three items show that we have somehow bred some fraction of our friends into DUmmies, meaning party loyalists, meaning the (R) is what counts.

They literally are apoplectic that outsiders might vote for their (R) candidate! 'We're fully capable of losing without your help thank you very much!'

The Reagan revolution could not have survived under some members of this party, they would have rejected all the Independents. In fact practically all of the "elite", the "thinkers", the Wills, Krauts, VDH, everyone, are hell bent to stay (R)etards.

It doesn't matter a wit how many elections they lose. And this positively proves that it is a uniparty because they would rather lose and remain the loyal opposition than to win and try to save the country.

I meant to add ...

Who really killed Andrew Breitbart?

... we sure cannot rule out the (R)etards.

And yet Trump, unlike all the GOP heroes that the girlyboys at NR have championed in recent years, may actually do something about the alien invasion that has ruined VDH’s home town. Mexifornia much, Victor?

Should be:

Et tu, VDH?

(We need a law against "helpful" spellcheckers)

Hell, if a candidate would promise to burn Washington DC to the ground, I would vote for them over Trump.

“If he gets a chance to name a SCOTUS justice, I’m sure they would be conservative.”

You have no idea whom he would pick and I doubt he knows whom he would pick - he is as likely to pick Michael Moore as he is to pick a conservative judge. When he found out Moore was not a lawyer, perhaps he would choose Oprah Winfrey as he second choice. Oh, no, he found out he really had to pick a lawyer. He is a showman, salesman, say anything to get a deal.

Only Trump, Bush, and Paul are drawing significant negatives.

With respect, thry merit the term presstitute and worse. There is about as much variance in opinion amongst NR shills as there was among apparatchiks in soviet Russia.

Bill Buckley is spinning in his grave.

Victor Davis Hanson? Afraid?

Nope VDH is pretty much a straight arrow. He is just offering up his opinion. He may be right - he generally is or he may be wrong. But he is definitely not a Dopey GOPe.

You miss the big picture. Trump has more baggage than freight train, his negatives go through the roof, and he won’t be able to win in a national election that is crucial to this country. He has a checkered past on all the major issues and Heaven knows what he’ll do if he is elected, which of course won’t happen. And this is the real fear of true conservatives losing another election.

Not a hope. Check the internals of the last CNN poll that showed him leading in Iowa.
