Gun Control 2015: Will Cabela's Stop Carrying 8-Round Magazines?

Not Likely If Customers Have Their Say On Trinity Church Proposal By Clark Mindock @clarkmindock On 12/22/15 AT 3:03 PM

Trinity Church in New York City is using its shareholder status to push major U.S. gun retailer Cabela's to stop carrying firearms with more than an eight round capacity, underscoring the efforts of gun control proponents who continue to look for ways to make the nation safer through stricter limits on weapons and gear. With second amendment politics effectively stopping federal gun control legislation in a calendar year replete with mass shootings, economic pressure from shareholders like Trinity could be one of the only viable ways forward.

Wielding economic leverage through partial ownership of a company works, said Brannon Denning, a professor and gun rights expert at the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Alabama. "[But] it can work both ways: On the one hand you know large investors or people who have a large stake in these companies who can try to lean on them." On the other hand, customers may be unhappy if the store they trust to carry products they want suddenly cuts them from shelves, he said.

Trinity has requested that the company stop selling high capacity weapons in a proposal for the next annual shareholders meeting, according to the New York Times.

How much leverage a Manhattan church might have on the Nebraska-based Cabelas is up for debate. The church owns about 4,600 shares of about 69 million total outstanding shares, according to the New York Times, and it is a long-term shareholder. That is a relatively small amount compared to the overall total.

The wishes of a church in the Financial District of famously-liberal New York City are likely far different from those of the customers who frequent Cabelas, noted Johnson, of Fordham University. Why would they change now?

They’d be smarter to dump the stock, it’s been performing badly. Plus it looks like Bass Pro Shops may buy Cabelas.

Walmart the Latest Victim of Newest Liberal Anti-Gun Tactic

by Warner Todd Huston April 9, 2015 5:03 pm

The newest angle that anti-constitution liberals are using to push gun control is to force corporate boards to bow to political agendas in the boardroom instead of thinking of the bottom line. That is what is happening to Walmart right now as an anti-gun group that has shares in Walmart is trying to use its investment as a weapon to force Walmart to stop selling guns and ammo.

This group of investors tried to force Walmart to institute a no-gun policy that was based on the group’s social agenda and had nothing at all to do with business concerns. Walmart refused to do so and so the investor group took Walmart to court to force the company to bend to the anti-gun agenda.

In its first court case, Walmart lost and a left-wing, anti-constitution judge told Walmart to bow to the investor group’s will.

Now Walmart is appealing[1] and if it loses again it will change how America does business... and for the worse.

Walmart’s right to sell firearms and ammunition is being threatened by a lawsuit.

Fox Business Network reporter Adam Shapiro reported on “Fox and Friends First” this morning that a court decision could stop the retail giant from selling guns, which could change the way publicly traded companies do business in the United States.

If I were Cabela's I'd offer them 20% over current market price for their shares and tell them to take a hike.

A quarter million to make them go away would be money well spent.

“How much leverage a Manhattan church might have on the Nebraska-based Cabelas is up for debate. The church owns about 4,600 shares of about 69 million total outstanding shares, . . .”

Corporations routinely ignore the wishes of shareholders who have a much larger ownership position. The only reason for management to comply with the demands of the church is an assessment the negative public relations the church can generate is more costly to the company than the revenue it will lose by dropping the products the church finds unacceptable. Plus the cost to the company from any negative reaction by its customers.

Seems to me the direction for management is clear. Politely thank the church for its input and tell the church the company will continue to act in the best financial interest of the majority of its stockholders.

Done deal apparently. Reports of the sale were leaked to Montana news outlets a few weeks ago.

And Cabelas' stores across the country are holding fire sales, knocking their inventories way back to prepare for the takeover.

I've been calling across the country looking for a specific item and have been told again and again that the stores are in the middle of a selldown.

Indeed. Who is next up with an agenda? Black people who hate Barbie Dolls? Lesbians who hate Ken Dolls? Enviro-fascists who think fishing gear and lures are cruel to fish? People who are allergic to synthetic fabrics and demand Walmart only sell cotton or wool garmants? Where will it end?

This one could go all the way to the USSC.

It’s nice to be aware of what’s going on, but the alarm may be premature. In Walmart’s case, for instance, the court case is just about putting the anti-gun faction proposals up for a vote at the shareholder’s meeting. The court is not forcing Walmart to stop selling guns.

And the Cabela’s case is just some anti-gun dweeb church getting free publicity. As noted in the story, their influence with the company is minute.

There is a certain amount of demand for large capacity magazines. If the main line stores do not fill the demand someone else will come along to sell.

Under the current ownership, I doubt Cabelas would budge. There are a number of items which Cabelas won’t ship to the people’s republic of California, which are carried for everyone else in America.

That said, if they change ownership, who knows.

But I doubt the current ownership would care one bit, they won’t change.

Updated Dec. 2, 2015

Cabela’s finally addressed the rumors and said Wednesday that its board is “initiating a process to explore and evaluate a wide range of strategic alternatives to further enhance shareholder value.”

Bass Pro Shops may be gobbling up competitor Cabela’s.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that privately held outdoors retailer Bass Pro Shops was shopping Cabela’s Inc.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday that an activist investor is encouraging Cabela’s to do something. Cabela’s shares are up in the pre-market.

Missouri-based Bass Pro has been working with an investment bank on a potential offer of its Nebraska-based publicly traded competitor, according to these reports.

It appears that the headline editor needs to go back to journalism school.

The headline says "Will Cabela's Stop Carrying 8-Round Magazines," but the story says that there is pressure to stop selling magazines with more than an eight round capacity.

They’ll never do it. No business is dumb enough to slap 90% of their target demographic in the face.

Cabelas is not the only place to buy gun accessories. I buy alot of hunting clothing and whatnots from them and occasionally buy shooting accessories. If they cave to gun grabbers... effectively slapping 90% of their target demographic in the face... I will not even buy clothing there anymore.

There are dozens of other retailers that would be more than happy to fill that market vacuum.

Cabelas is a lost cause.
