I just finished reading Tom Hron’s book, Fighting For Your Life, Man-Eater Bears. It’s a good read written from experience. His writing style is a little quirky though.

“The guy was clearly visible from the vantage point of the videographer.”

What you see later on the screen and what you notice in real time through the viewfinder can be two different things. Tunnel vision.

You don’t think a door opened or footsteps fell on the concrete?

Of course, we will never know; my first instinct at seeing someone, would be to call out, ESPECIALLY if he is only 2 steps away.

I bet the photog was well across the street at a safe distance. He zooms back at one point, probably still focused mentally on the bear.

Yeah, my first thought when I see a bear prowling around my neighbor’s house is to take a video instead of using my phone to warn my neighbor.

He was a one note bear, needed some practice. A bit like my sentence structure on occasion.

Your sentence structure was fine. If you were writing about people, you would have wanted to attribute the action to the specific person, but I think everyone knows it wasn't the bear blowing the call. I was just funnin' ya.

I know I would be focused on the bear and paying little attention to anything else.

I’ve been in very similar situations - my first thought has always been the safety of those in the area.

I watched that first video and noticed the bear was semi-confrontational. He was driving those joggers back out of his territory. Notice he “scent marked” the trees on the boundary before retreating.

Yep- A few times there it looked like it was coming in for the attack- The folks must been scared witless when it ‘breached their personal space’ as it were- scary stuff-

A thing I noticed was that the bear wasn’t clapping it’s teeth- which bears usually do when scared or angry nor did it seem to be huffing much- A good dose of bear spray would have ended the confrontation- even from a distance- bears just really take off running when they hear and see the spray for some reason even when it doesn’t hit them- seen a few videos on youtube about it- Maybe they associate the spray with skunk spray or soemthing
