There are many ways to tan a deer hide and you experienced hunters out there have your own methods. Here's a simple step-by-step way:

Step 1: Flesh the Hide

Step 2: Soak the Hide

Step 3: De-hair the Hide

Step 4: Remove the Grain and Membrane

Step 5: Neutralize the Lye

See the rest of the steps here. So what's your method?

I messed with tanning a bit. It was a lot of work, and I never did get it to turn out as soft as the commercially-tanned hides.

The colloquial term for a dollar is a buck. Hunters in colonial America would get one Spanish silver dollar for a buckskin. Hence one buck was the equivalent of one dollar.

Wouldn’t that make pesos the bucks? Spanish didn’t use dollars.

I’ve tried with Elk and Mule Deer, neither one worked out for my satisfaction. Too much work, not as soft as I imagined and the hides were heavy to carry out of the mountains on my back.

Brain tanning..
Watch a series called Mountain Men.
One of the men is Tom in Idaho, Montana, somewhere up there.
He brain tans, then smokes the hides. Interesting to watch him and the others.

Brain tanning..

Every animal has just enough brains to tan it's hide. True.

Did one myself this way. Didn't quite turn out as soft as I would like, but it has remained in good condition after many years.

The Spanish eight reale silver coin, known as the Spanish dollar, was commonly used in colonial America and after the Revolution as currency.

Some of my ancestors were Tanners, and as I understand it they use PEE........

What did they do, collect all the potty's?. Their tanneries were right in the middle of town, must have stunk pretty bad, but they were very prosperous.

Tom on “Mountain Men” uses some sort of broth made from animal brains to douse the skin and make it soft - pretty disgusting.....

First of all, you get your wife or girl friend to chew on the hide to soften and break down the hide. Then you can go sing for the choir at the Vatican. Nothing to it.
