Politics: San Jose Mayor employs 'Mohammed cartoon' defense to blame riots on Trump
Cain TV ^ | June 3, 2016 | Robert Laurie

Free speech? What free speech.

"You were asking for it." It's the ultimate 'blame the victim' line, and it's been used in an attempt to excuse everything from theft, to Rape, to Murder. If you didn't leave it out, it wouldn't have been taken. If you didn't insult that guy, he wouldn't have punched you. If you didn't dress 'all pretty' the rapist wouldn’t have pounced.

Now, Sam Liccardo - the Hillary-supporting mayor of 'sanctuary city' San Jose - is employing that argument in an effort to absolve violent rioters of wrongdoing.

From the AP:

"Our police officers have done an extremely courageous and professional job so far," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told The Associated Press by phone. "We're all still holding our breath to see the outcome of this dangerous and explosive situation."

The mayor, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter, criticized Trump for coming to cities and igniting problems that local police departments had to deal with.

"At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign," Liccardo said.

For progressives, the "irresponsible behavior of his campaign" basically amounts to "speech we don't like." They despise Trump's opinions, his words upset them, and they're lashing out in an effort to silence the candidate and his supporters. The excuse is: If he didn't say the things he said, we wouldn't have to punch people, destroy cars, and burn stuff.

Remember, via CNN, this is what went down in Liccardo's city:

Protesters jumped on cars, pelted Trump supporters with eggs and water balloons, snatched signs, and stole “Make America Great” hats off supporters’ heads before burning them and snapping selfies with the charred remains.

Several people were caught on camera punching Trump supporters.

By blaming Trump for the despicable rage-based actions of the rioters, Liccardo is essentially arguing that the rioters - who spent the night carping about how California should still be part of Mexico - are simply too stupid or too out of control to fight speech with speech.

It's not a new argument. We've heard progressives make it before - when they were demanding free speech limits in the wake of shootings at a Mohammed cartoon exhibit.

“Fighting words is the idea that you are saying something that is so offensive that it will lead to an immediate breach of the peace,” Szmer explained. “In other words, you are saying something and you should expect a violent reaction by other people.”

The exhibit of cartoons in Texas might have crossed the line, Szmer said.

“I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect what they were doing would incite a violent reaction,” he said.

So remember, folks: That guy at the top of the page covered in blood? He had had it coming.

If you're walking around San Jose, minding your own business, and some thug descends upon you; don't start whining. You were probably asking for it. If you hadn't enraged your attacker with your 'irresponsible behavior,' you would have been fine.

And the utter gall of Police and Reporters asking the victims if they said anything to provoke the attack. The police better get this right. There will be a revolution and the illegals are not going to like it. COMMUNITY ORGANIZE THIS! We taxpaying American citizens have a right to speak. We will not be silenced by illegal thugs. Say Bye-Bye! thanks Charles Krauthammer and Paul Ryan and the rest of you milk-toast sympathizing facilitators.

Unfortunately law and order has not been a high priority in the bay area for a long time now.

Yep I will make sure my heart bleeds next time a San Jose cop gets attacked or killed by a Thug Criminal.

If you didn’t have that threatening Uniform I wouldn’t have SHOT YOU!

This will be the last time Trump supporters are victims.

Trump needs to lecture the Mayor for ordering the cops to stand down.

Tell ‘em, “screw you, we’re providing our own security in the future.”

(knowing CCW isn’t possible inside the rally....let alone California)

I just checked my guns and ammo. I have them because I intend to use them if I am forced to.

I’m feeling pressure.

Good article, What a pathetic cretin the mayor is, he essentially gave cover to the thugs in his comments, and the author of the article does a good job skewering him.

It was also reported elsewhere that the police did nothing to protect Trump supporters in the initial period of them leaving the arena, when many were singled out and set upon by mobs.

Perhaps they had some sort of larger tactical mission, but this was a clear failure, as was the failure to secure the garage.

It should be clear by now that Trump supporters need to be protected from these mobs. If the police continue to fail one can expect that eventually there will be serious injury or death on one or both sides as these things continue.

Eventually one of these mobs is either going to lose control and go into a feeding frenzy on a Trump supporter separated from the herd, or they are going to pick the wrong Caucasian to f*ck with and get diced.

It is sickening to see the American flag trashed, and the Mexican flag paraded by these thugs.

I wonder, did the San Jose Mayor order the police to stand down and not to do anything about the violent Mexicans at the Trump rally? Because it sure looks like the San Jose police didn’t do anything yesterday.

Even if the scumbag mayor makes such an order, a police officer is bound by oath to uphold the law. A police officer who knowingly allowed personal or property damage has committed treason against that oath and should be fired.
Peace Officer Oath of Office, State of California PEACE OFFICER OATH OF OFFICE, State of California California Constution Article 20, Sec. 3. Misc. Subjects [Required Oath of Office ] " I, ___________________________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter. "And I do further swear (or affirm) that I do not advocate, nor am I a member of any party or organization, political or other- wise, that now advocates the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means; that within the five years immediately preceding the taking of this oath (or affirmation) I have not been a member of any party or organization, political or other-wise, that advocated the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means. I will not advocate nor become (name of office) a member of any party or organization, political or otherwise, that advocates the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means."
