Millions of men in the prime of their lives are missing from the labor force. Could a big U.S. housing construction project bring them back?
Something is rotten in the U.S. economy. Poor men without a college degree are disappearing from the labor force. The share of prime-age men (ages 25-54) who are neither working nor looking for work has doubled since the 1970s.
The U.S.’s labor participation rate for this group of men is lower than every country in the OECD except for Israel (an outlier, because of the high number of non-working Orthodox Jewish men) and Italy (an economic omnishambles). Today, one in six prime-age men in America are either unemployed or out of the workforce altogether—about 10 million men.
So, this is the 10-million-man question: Where did all these guys go?
According to a report from White House economists released last week, non-working prime-age men skew young, are less likely to be parents, are disproportionately black and less educated, and are concentrated in the South.
In the last few years, several writers and economists have suggested that many of them are in school, on disability, or in prison. More optimistically, some said that men are more likely to help their spouses with raising children and cleaning the house. But upon investigation, none of these answers fully explains the disappearance of prime-age men....

Remember those families with 4 or 6 or eight kids that were pretty common when we were kids?
They they not have four or six kids. They had two.
The only families with lots of kids are immigrants.

Construction jobs and general labor jobs are dominated by immigrants in large parts of the US—certainly in California one would be hard-pressed to find a native American on a housing job site.
An education degree is like a big wall to those who lack one. Most jobs, if only the skills needed to do the job, do not require a degree. All businesses have done is download the training costs onto the people seeking employment.
My mostly Hispanic neighbors have all kinds of kids.

In Minnesota where we lived for 16 years, if you wanted a boulder wall built, tree planted or new roofing shingles, Mexicans would do it.
Immigrants on the other hand, qualify for every gov program, reduced price college for their kids, EBT, housing.
By allowing our government to do this, we only screwed ourselves.
Only way to recover our country is at the point of a gun.
And infrastructure. Designers, engineers, and all companies involved would be hiring, HR directors, accountants, etc. etc.
Same was true in Northen Illinois where my in-laws lived. It hasn’t happened in SE Missouri yet.
Americans would do it to, if the wages were reflective of the value of the work. Unfortunately, with illegal workers, the scheme is skewed downward.

I guess sometimes that makes sense. There were lots of full-time beggars during Biblical times and later. If that was the only way I could support my wife I suppose I’d resort to that. LOL
Well, they used to hang out on the stoop, on the street corner and around barrels full of fire. Then they went to the welfare office. Now they don't have to do anything because their EBT cards get loaded automatically every week or two. So, indeed, it is a big mystery as to where they went. I'm stumped, yet again.
It’s once a month, IIRC.
Some are now living with their aging parents and holding down McFry jobs. We have about 3-4 doing that in our neighborhood.
