Pundits often talk about the white vote, but its more complicated than that. Voters who say they have German or Italian heritage lean most heavily to Trump and the GOP, a poll run for BuzzFeed News reveals.
Race and ethnicity have been a constant backdrop to the 2016 presidential election, thanks to Donald Trumps provocative comments on immigrants, black communities, and an American-born judge he called Mexican.
Yet in all the slicing and dicing of voting intentions by key demographic groups, the white vote has largely been considered as a single ethnic block until now.
A new poll run for BuzzFeed News, which delves into white voters self-reported ancestry, reveals surprising diversity in their political outlook. White voters who identify most strongly with their German or Italian heritage strongly support Trump, whereas those who self-identify as Irish, English, or Scottish are more evenly split between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Between September 22 and October 2 (notably, before the bombshell video of Trump making lewd comments about women), as part of its regular online political poll, the survey firm Morning Consult asked more than 5,000 registered voters to check which of the most common ancestry categories recorded by the Census Bureau applied to them, and also to pick the one ancestry they identified with most....

Go Herr Trumpf!! Und Herr Pentz!
Still not tired of Winning.
It’s about time that the media start recognizing that there are millions of factions of people in the USA. They tend to be way too narrow-minded.
I am proud to be an American of German ancestry.
Wow. Nationalists do say that the US fought for the wrong side in WWII.
Racists - white is white is white. There are no separations of whiteness, only of non-whiteness. Reeducation camps are needed here. If this abomination isn't stamped out, the next thing that will happen is that males will demand to be referred to as men, and claim to have differing personal opinions. This is insanity - it must be stopped! Slippery slope, slippery slope!
It’s interesting how the author went out of his way to point out that Trump called an American born judge “Mexican.” The article then goes on to identify other American born citizens as Italians, Irish, German, etc.
What the hell are you talking about?
Jews love Trump also. Not the upper west side JINO, but real Jews, who are also Zionists.
Many years ago I had a conversation with a theology teacher about Hitler. He said, those Jews in NYC who vote Democrat were Hitlers intended victims with the rest of us collateral damage.
Many years later, looking back at that statement, he wasn’t too far off the mark.
I’m 50/50 Italian/German and everyone in my extended family (most in PA) is voting for Trump!
What nationalists are those? I don’t like that term, preferring patriots myself, but what Americans thought we should have sided with Germany or Japan? Inquiring people want to know.
I have this argument with my wife all the time. I’m of German, and English, ancestry but I could give a hoot about either one. When my wife says “you’re German” I say no I’m not, I’m American. I use the analogy that while a cake has flour in it, that doesn’t mean that a cake IS flour.
German and Italian are not homogeneous groups in Europe. There’s a lot of difference between north and south Italians, and north and south Germans.
So to whatever extent the ethnic identities remain in the US, I’d expect those differences to carry over.
This 74% Italian...23% Middle Eastern...1% Jew...1% African and 1% Spanish is voting Trump.
His strongest core of support, however, comes from those who identify as “American.” That would be many if not most Evangelicals, practically all native white southerners and most of Appalachia. Some have ancestry that’s been here so long that there’s no one country that they’re “from.”
I must be mistaken about my heritage. I am Scots, Welsh, English on all sides.
And am a direct descendant, along with a whole bunch of others, of John and Priscilla Alden on my paternal grandmother’s side.
But, I did marry an Italian, so maybe caught it from him. /s
You may want to head to your “safe place” because were all over the place!
Nice Nazi reference first thing out of the box by the way. Dumb Ass.
