As a matter of fact, there is only one fruitcake, and it keeps getting re-gifted.
The researchers decide to box it up and send it to their relatives for Christmas..........................
I did not know that my Aunt Mary had ever been to Antarctica.
Just make it without the gooey green things, with more walnuts and soak it in brandy for a good long time. Then, light it up, burn it to a crisp and throw it in the garbage after it’s cooled down.
I’d think that Antarctica would be one of the best places on earth to preserve a fruit cake. I don’t think it’s remarkable at all. And as far as “almost edible” goes, that might well have been the initial condition of the fruit cake. They vary in quality, even when new.
Good fruitcake? LOL!!!
But the 100 year old case of single malt they found went down just fine....
And then they burned the fruitcake like a yule log to keep warm.

St. Mary’s of the Lake in Wisconsin used to make an awesome fruitcake. They quit when it was going to cost too much to bring their kitchen up to new codes. I found the recipe on line and made it one year. It was as good as I remembered, but a LOT of work.
My brother and I are going on 30 years refitting the same cheap fruitcake.

This sounds like my grandfathers applesauce cake. He did not drink, but he put rum in the cake after baking, then aged it in a cool, dark place for 30 days. Yummy!
My father inherited the recipe, but my mother was very much opposed to demon rum, so he never did use it. Without aging with rum, the applesauce cake was only okay.

Knew a man that made fruitcake and sold them on his way to work.
He had not made them in years and I asked for his recipe.
He said not to bother that Costco has the best fruitcake and it is delicious.
Still have some in freezer from last Christmas and it is such a treat to have.
My Mother used to frost fruitcake with almond frosting, can still taste the memory.
100 year old fruitcake... didn’t realize that Barney Frank was that old.
